Exhaust Flange

Hi guys,
I have a 2010 Jeep Patriot North Edition, it is my first car and I try to do the majority of the work on it myself since I’m a student. Recently I’ve heard this exhaust leak and I have located it right where the flange is. Today I sprayed some rust penetrator a few times then I tried removing one of the bolts in order to replace the gasket ... and it broke. I’ve got a couple questions that I’m wondering if anyone has got answers to. 1- Are these factory bolts welded or threaded anywhere cause I can’t seem to remove what’s left - if not any tips other then rust penetrator or torch? 2- do you know the gasket part number or where to find one I’m only able to find the 4 bolt pattern rather than my 2 bolt. Thanks for the help!

Welcome to the group! Typical exhaust flange. The studs are welded in, and they almost always break when trying to remove them. You need to get an exhaust flange repair kit. Watch this vieo for more info:

You MAY, be able to get a ratchet on the welded nut and snap it off from the welds. Probably a 50/50 chance of it working and if it does just replace the bolt.

Easiest/laziest/ugliest 'repair' buy a cheap set of vise grips at Harbor Freight, clamp them on, and run it until the rest of the flange rots off.

Whatever you do, be careful working there. It looks like the bits you're working with are right next to the gas tank. Don't blow yourself up, heh?
