Does anyone know if you can put a 2.4L engine from a 2011 Dodge Avenger in a 2010 Jeep Patriot with a 2.4L engine that is being taken out? I went to a local pick and pull, and they look identical from the outside.

Hello and welcome to the Jeep group. I believe it can be done with no issues. But you might have to bring some parts from the 2.4 Patriot engine over to the Avenger engine to make it work. Just my thoughts. I am sure you will get good advice from other members of the group. :)

Thanks for the words of encouragement.

When I look on this year/model interchange list, it doesn't list this car as a possible candidate, so I'm reluctant to go through all that work removing the engine if it won't work. However, the list doesn't seem right to me when the engines look so similar. I assume the local pick and pull I went to is using a similar kind of list.

Year/Model Interchange List -- All Makes -- Cars and Trucks

I asked the parts department at the local Chrysler dealership, and he didn't think it would work judging by the part numbers he was looking at, but he recommended going on one of these forums to see if anyone has done it before. I will do some more digging to see what I can find just to be sure. I really would like to use that engine, because it was the best one I saw today.

Thanks again

Here's some photos I found on the internet of both engines.

I think I may have made the connection between these two lists to confirm they are compatible.

On page 5 of the following compatibility list
ebay 2011-2020 Dodge Journey 2.4L Engine Motor Longblock 44K Miles - Compatibility List
it says this engine is compatible for both a 2011 Dodge Avenger 2.4L I4 and a 2011 Jeep Patriot 2.4L I4.

On page 15 of the following compatibility list
Year/Model Interchange List -- All Makes -- Cars and Trucks
it says the 2010 Jeep Patriot parts are interchangeable for Start/End years from 2007 to 2012.

From what I can tell, if the 2011 Dodge Journey 2.4L engine for sale on ebay is compatible with both the 2011 Dodge Avenger and 2011 Jeep Patriot, and the parts on Jeep Patriots are interchangeable between the years of 2007 to 2012, then this should mean this style of engine should work in a 2010 Jeep Patriot.

I don't know if anyone cares to try and confirm this or not for me?

I seem to be talking to myself here, but I thought I'd just close this out for anyone who happens to have the same question in the future.

The engine was identical, except for the fact the 2011 Avenger didn't have the extra coolant temperature sensor on the engine block, and it didn't have an intake runner control or flapper inside the intake manifold. I was able to swap both of them over from the old motor to the "new" motor. For some reason they didn't put the extra temp. sensor on the motor for any of the 2011 models, whether it was a Jeep or an Avenger.

To take out the metal plug out of the threaded hole provided in the location for the temp. sensor on the engine block, which was required for the 2010 model, I needed to provide heat around the plug with a propane torch. The plug was easy to take out after I did this.

To swap the intake runner on the "new" intake manifold I had to pop out the plastic tab inside the hole the shaft for the runner connects to the actuator. The mounting holes for the actuator were available on the "new" intake manifold.

I also had to swap out the right engine support bolted to the motor because the Avenger has a different layout under the hood, way roomier than the Jeep.

FYI, the "new" engine I salvaged off the 2011 Avenger from the local Pick'n'Pull seems to be running fine in the 2010 Jeep Patriot. It cost me $225 CAD for the new motor. Not a bad deal! This fix would have cost me over $5000 if I would have had it done at a service centre. If I hadn't done the work myself, the car would've ended up in the scrap yard.
