Door Speaker Installation

I've read a lot of posts asking which speaker fit, which don't, and how to replace speakers. Here is how to replace them and the info should also help with which speakers fit and which don't.

Vehicle: 2010 Jeep Patriot, standard speaker system (not Boston Acoustics)

Step 1: Buy speakers and speaker wiring harnesses (optional).
  • All 4 doors take 6x9 speakers. We look at mounting depth later.
  • Do NOT buy the Schosche brand harnesses on eBay that say for "1991-up Chrysler, etc vehicles." They do not work... I learned this the hard way. I could only find the correct ones on crutchfield.com. Link here. They come in pairs just like speakers do.
  • You will also need a Torx bit for the screws (not sure which size).

Step 2: If you bought harnesses, attach them to each speaker.
  • BLACK wire on harness goes to BLACK wire post on speaker.

  • WHITE wire on harness goes to RED wire post on speaker.

  • The posts are different sizes so this part is hard to mess up.

Step 3: Remove speaker grill.

  • I used a metal butter knife, starting at the bottom and prying off. You can use other things to get in there but I would start at the bottom and work my way around the speaker. This was the hardest part because I didn't want to break anything.
  • See pictures below for inside of speaker grille to get a better understanding of how it attaches to the door panel.

Step 4: Use Torx driver to remove screws.
  • There are two size screws so remember where they go.

Step 5: Skip this step to continue installation. This is to show mounting depth and size of speaker hole.
  • From the door's sheet metal to the mounting surface of the door panel is almost 6 inches.
  • There is nothing behind the top portion that is holding the speaker wire so it can be cut if needed.
  • The rear door seems to have less room with door bracing and what looks like part of the window assembly in the way.

Step 6: Connect wire harness to stock harness
  • If you didn't buy harnesses you have to cut the stock harness off and splice the wires together.

Step 7: Re-install speaker and screws. Tips:
  • Put the connection points (where you attached the harness to the speaker) toward the bottom of the door where there is more room.
  • Install the long screws first but do not tighten yet. Tighten after completely tightening short screws.
  • The short screws have a wide head so it may look like they won't fit but make sure you screw them all the way to the base.

Step 8: Test speaker, and reinstall speaker grill. Repeat for other doors.

Thank you for taking the time to document this process.

The tweeter/mid-range unit on the R1693 is raised an inch above the bottom of the mounting flange.

Does the tweeter/mid-range unit clear the stock speaker grill?

Hmmm, I still need a Jeep....

Hey, I'm looking to install a Nav Receiver in place of my stock cd/stereo setup in my 2009 Jeep Patriot w/o Boston Acoustics.

Crutchfield has been awesome for me before so i'm looking into this:

Just need clarification if I remove my stock unit that this will definitely fit. It says it does but looking into size comparisons, i'm questioning. I know Crutchfield comes with different mounting bracket sizes but just needed to make sure that if I go on near $1k for a unit that it'll be right the first time.

great post, as far as the torx bits you need a 20 and a 25 (but 20 will work for both sizes)

crutchfield is extremely reliable. if they say it fits, i would not hesitate to buy it. good luck.

The R1693's sound like a good price for a simple upgrade, how to they compare to the stock setup? I also have the non-boston setup, and I think they might be craping out. They already started getting that vibration noise when theirs a little bit of bass.

The base speakers aren't that bad. I play my MP3's on them all the time and I find them to be way better than the crap that came stock in my old Volvo s40 2001. They might not be great with bass but they're otherwise fine.

That being said, I can't wait to upgrade them anyway once my warranty runs out. I want me my bass.

Hi I am new here just bought (2) 2011 patriots (one black one white) and wanted to upgrade the speakers in my wife's new ride. Are the speakers in the 2011 still 6x9? If so I am definitely going the route you did.

Note: these are the base model 4x2 sport Patriots. with manual windows.
Still liking the vehicle a lot!

The door panels except for maybe some chrome accents, extra padding, and insulation didn't change so you should be good to go.

Check out Murman's post above, # 11. He has a 2011 and posted some pics.

For swapping speakers it isn't necessary, but its a good habit to get into anytime you are going to be dealing with electronics in the vehicle.

Sorry I meant will these fit the front(depth). It looks like you installed them in the front and back, but crutchfield says rear only. I bought these and would like to use them in the front and put 2 ways in the rear.


As for 2 ways in th rear. I am just running from the factory HU, so I know I won't get the max out of them, but I'm sure it will still sound great. Would you guys recommend Alpine SPR-69 or Boston Acoustics SR95 for the rear? i wanted something a little bassier than the Fosgate 1693's.

I installed the Rockford Fosgate Prime R1693 6-Inch x 9-Inch Full Range 3-Way Speakers in each door of my 2011 Patriot Latitude, with no problems.

I used adapters from Crutchfield to connect the speaker to the door wiring. Plug and play.

I thought I would post for those of you who have the Boston Accoustic setup and are looking to upgrade the door speakers only as I did.

I'm not sure if the front & rear speakers are the same as those found on the standard sound system but be advised that since the BA has tweeters up on each side of the dash the front door speakers are setup for bass only I believe and therefore any 3-way sepakers on the front doors is a waste of money.

I learned this the hard way as I'm clearly no audiophile.:doh:

Sorry in advance if this questions sucks. I just replaced the 6X9's in my '08 Sport...the same as in this post. I upgraded my HU which has 4 RCA outs. I now want to amp the speakers. Can I just run 4 RCA's out from the HU to the amp and a power and ground cable? I don't need to tap into the speaker wire also do I?
