My wife and bought a Jeep Patriot 2.0 CVT in late April (reasons for 2.0 below). We really like our Patriot a lot, (yes, we would get another one in 2.4).
BUT, our fuel mileage has come nowhere close to the 26 highway/30 city that is advertised, nor has it come close to the 2008 readjusted figure of 23/27. After a series of road trips, the vehicle is now completely broken in (5 k miles).
In Chicago city driving, we get about 18 MPG. On the highway, the average is about 23-24 mpg. BTW, with past cars I have gotten better MPG than the EPA est, (with a 2001 Grand Am GT, for example).
We are very disappointed with this MPG obviously! For this MPG, we could be driving the 2.4 with 4X4!!!
Could there be something wrong with our Patriot? Should we contact the dealer?
We went with the 2.0 for many reasons, including the extremely high gas prices in Chicago and the EPA estimated 30 mpg for the 2.0, the affordable sticker price, and the color on the lot with the 2.0 was what we wanted (white). Also, we almost exclusively drive on highway and city asphalt - although we will be taking it to a ranch for some light "off-road" driving, nothing a 2wd truck can't handle.
Overall, the 2.0 is very underpowered and this engine option was a real mistake for us considering that we aren't even getting the benefits!
