I took my Patriot 10' to the Jeep dealers for its first service and when they returned it the 'key in ignition' alarm was gone. The service guy asked why I hadn't already removed it as it is one of the first things Patriot owners usually do? Though I had already looked through the Jeeps manual which did not provide instruction on doing so. I know this doesn't answer the question on 'how to' but from the way the service guy made it sound like common knowledge, I assume it can be done without difficulty.
