First of all hi to everyone and thanks in advance for your help. My wife has just bought a 2009 CRD manual Patriot (Sports pak). Now, every now and then after having reversed up she finds it "impossible" to find first gear. Saying that it just keeps going onto reverse. She says even with the reverse latch under the gear knob down and having gone from reverse all the way to the other side over to where 5th and 6th gear are and then coming all the back across she is still unable to find 1st as it keeps allowing her go into reverse.
I have had quick look under the gear stick cover and it looks as though the mechanism for the reverse gate is a manually operated system with a cable that lifts the gate allowing the stick to be pushed over to engaged reverse. Is this right and has any had similar issues with this?
Cheers,
Jarrod.

Yeh, that does make sense and that's what I have told her to do. Have you researched it further or is something that you have just adapted too? She's getting a bit stressed out that it may be something more serious than what I think.

welcome and enjoy your pat!
try this:
under the hood, take out the crd cover and the filter box.
you will then be able to visualize the gearbox.
at the top of it you will see the place where the shifting cables connect.
there should be a plastic safety there that holds them firm.
make sure it isn' t loose.
if it is in place but loose, get some plastic retainers over it,at least 2 diagonally.
i mean those plastic retainers used for fixing electric cables together.
if that safety is in place and firm, you don't need to do this, might just be a gearbox syncro problem.
