After having planned to mount new rims and tires in the past 7 months, I finally followed through. I purchased Firestone Destination A/Ts after doing research here and on TireRack.com, purchased Cragar Soft 8 rims (4 inch offset, 5x4.5" bolt pattern), had my father in-law mount and balance all 4, then hand tightened all wheels myself. I just hate it when tire shops over-torque and cross thread nuts. In case you are wondering, it definitely is not lifted, the wheel tire combo sticks outwards up to 2" and gives it a 1.5" horizontal lift. The rubbing is only isolated to the rearward 4"x1" section of plastic liner mounted to inner fenderwell located behind front tires. I personally consider it minor as it only rubs when wheels are cranked to left and right extremes (lock to lock) and there is no metal to rubber contact or rim to metal contact. Considering the heat gun or mallet mod in fenderwell. What are your opinions?

Nifty! Although they do poke out of the wheel wells a little, don't they... How close a fit were those vertically? There's that dang "lip" at the bottom of the spring...

What is the actual overall diameter of those tires? A tire calculator gives a theoretical diameter of 29.5" but there is some variation between a calculators figures and a tire manufacturers figures.

How do you like the performance with those tires? Has street driving suffered much due to the taller tire size?

Thanks for all the compliments! The actual diameter is 29.5" and is 1.5" taller than the original fitment and widens the track by at least 2" all around. The sidewall is 1.2" wider than oem 205/70/R16s. As far as performance, having only driven on them since yesterday I can only say that my traction is better on hardball and gravel. I will bring up cons of these beasts as they arise. I just have to keep remembering that when the speedo reads 60mph my actual speed is 64.8mph.

Thanks! How much did you fork out for the A/T KOs?

I went with Firestones due to the low $109.00 price each.

Thanks for the recommend, but I just may go with the thickest blackest bedliner like rhinoliner aka RHINO LINING in the most vulnerable areas. They use RHINO LINING to bomb-proof vehicles and buildings... so it has got to work for dent and chip protection. Goes on just like paint and I can keep my original body lines.

Thanks for the heads up! I did the brake slam test on an abandoned road yesterday traveling at 55mph. Did not have problems... so far so good. I still have more tests to run. In the meantime I am :D

That looks so evil!
What's your lift kit, and whats your new clearance at the lowest point?
Good Job!

#15 ·
That's the beauty of it, no lift kit. The tires are exactly 1.5" taller than stock. My new clearance at lowest measured point is 9.5"... since it is a FDI. If I had an FDII I would clear 1 more inch. Still contemplating the 2" RRO kit.

Thank you, thank you, you're far too kind.

Yes I do and will, my 20 month running city/highway average is 25.83 mpg. I tend to have a leadfoot, weather permitting. I'll have to factor the new diameter into the odometer readings, since there are no flashes for over 28" tires. As they say... gotta pay to play. :pepper:

Coach B, 8% to be exact i.e., for every 60 miles read by my odometer, my actual speed is 64.8 mph. I just have to be cautious...

Yes I know, I ordered Cragar 5x4.5 center caps from quadratec.com, still waiting for delivery, I just couldn't wait to show off my rubber. Butter tubs could be a good temp fix, I'll just wait for UPS to pull up.

Are Cragers expensive? Where did you get them from?
heckler, I got the 397 series Cragar Soft 8s from Jegs.com
I went with the 16x7 (5x4.5" bolt pattern) 4" backspace. Each wheel is $53.99 and there is absolutely no shipping charge. Jegs.com will charge you for handling, but they ship to your door for free (continental US).

Thanks for the compliment! :pepper:

I did not see where you were from, perhaps you have a neighbor on the US side who could save you some green on the shipping? But otherwise a good price. Quadratec.com also has the same wheels... you may want to compare.

Stop the presses! I just would like to make a correction. My (FDI) oem 205/70R16s measure 27.3" in diameter. My new tires are 29.5" exact in diameter. Therefore I am sitting 2.2" higher without a lift kit. Yeah!!!

I just have to see about getting FDII coil springs for that extra 1 inch closer to the sky.

#30 ·
sorry to burst your euphoric bubble, but you need to cut the difference between diameters in half to calculate how much more clearance you've gained (1.1").

It would be just as much work to install FDII springs as it would be to install a RRO lift (I've installed the RRO myself). Sounds like you need a RRO lift! It's worth it!

I checked what I wrote down for my measurements. Before I pulled my old wheels off, I measured from the garage floor to the highest horizontal center point on each fender. My front end at each side was 30 1/8" give or take 1/16" My rear measurements 30 1/5". After slapping on my new combo, my front fenders at their highest horizontal point measured 32 3/8" I could not believe it so I measured twice. The rear is a different story... it only got up to 32" which we both know is 1 1/2" taller. I thought maybe there was a discrepancy with my tire pressure. Nope all at 40 psi for bead purposes. You burst my bubble only halfway. :Racing:
However, after the suspension settled, my pat sat 1/2" taller than a FDII with 215/70/17s

thanks again polished heckler, and thank you metalhead. I am fairly new to the midwest and their mudflap laws, but all of my in-laws have had big mudders & swampers sticking out of their fenders for 15 some odd years without problems. If I was still livin' in Hawai'i I would need fender flares to be within the law. That's the sad part about the law. It only hurts those that abide by them. But that would be a different forum.

Nice wheel set there, a definite off-road beginning, no mistaking that. The 4" offset is a brave move, you will have to keep us updated on any mechanical issues you might experience in the future.
You still need a lift!!! :DYour MK will be a real sharp Jeep then.
We also require a highway handling report, slalom report and off-road report.
Kewl look.

Here is my weekend highway report... you can definitely feel the extra weight slinging around but the rpms look comfortably lower now. 500 to 1000 rpms lower than before. I have driven "regular" Humvees and "Up-Armored" Humvees and in my opinion, the heavier Up-Armored tracked better on the highway and off. We all know that my acceleration is slower on the Up-Armored Humvee and on my Riot with heavier wheels, but I did not get this Patriot for speed. As for my new wheel/tire combo, it is heavier, tracks better, and it just feels more like a beast. When I have something $worthy to report I will do so at that time. Today, I passed a Wrangler Rubicon, Stock older Liberty and a stock FDI and boy did they stare, and stare, and stare, and... :blah:
