2.0 CRD sudden power loss

Hi. I've been a Patriot owner for 5 hours! Picked up my 1 year old 2.0 CRD this afternoon and drove it home. It's only got 9000 miles on the clock and has just been dealer serviced where I bought it.

On the way home doing about 75mph, there was a dramatic loss of power. It still moved, but 60mph was about all it had flat out. No noise, no smoke, no warning lights. All looked and sounded normal. I pulled over. Switched off ignition, and back on again and full power was restored, it was fine the rest of the journey and has been normal since.

Before I call up the garage, anyone else had this, or similar? Could it be an EGR valve or maybe an ECU hiccup?

I still love it, and I have to say, it's actually a lot faster than I thought it would be. I was expecting something really slow, but it's got plenty of midrange grunt. I had a play in the snow with the 4WD locked too. :) Other than that (and the dealer forgetting to give me the owners manual), it's perfect.

Thanks.

Hi!

I've a 2008 2.0 CRD too, with 29k Km (almost in the 30k service!), and so far nothing wrong with the engine or anything else!:smiley_thumbs_up: The only problem i had so far, was the Optima Battery that didn´t make 2 years...:wow:

The medium fuel consuption is about 8... 8,5l/100km, mostly city courses.

If you find anything wrong with the engine (hope not!) let us know!

best of luck with your new Jeep!

Thanks - that's good news. I'm gonna call the dealer today and get it put in for a check. I don't think they'll argue as I've owned it for less than 48 hours and it's still under warranty.

I'm getting 33.6mpg at present but that's all been cold-start, short journeys - and i make that 8.4l/100k which is about what you're getting. once i get it properly warmed up on a long run, I'm hoping to break 40mpg. I will also try the shell v-power diesel as in my BMW that gives an extra 20 miles or so on a tank from experience using the same daily commute as reference and trying to drive the same way.

Yeah, although it's slower than the beemer, it's fast enough for anything as long as you choose the right cog and keep it between 1500 and 3000rpm, it pulls really well. I'm pleasantly surprised.

Still got a slight miss-fire on mine above 3000 rpm. Below that perfect! I average 43 MPG. But on a long run last summer Brighton -Cheltenham I got nearer 48. Performed well in the snow . I'm booking it in next week for a couple of minor niggles but generally very pleased.....Oh & welcome to the site!!

Can I ask how many miles are on your Pat? I've had mine for just over a month with 1600 miles on it now and I can only get an average of 35mpg, and that is driving it really sensibly with no hard acceleration or going above 3500 rpm. The best I ever had it at was 44 mpg on the motorway, but that was in 6th gear at 55mph, and as soon as I touched the accelerator because of a slight uphill incline, it drops right back down again.

When driving on the motorway, the needle on the fuel gauge seems to drop rapidly and sometimes, I swear I'm only getting 25 mpg.

Not quite time for the 2 month checkup, but I'm a bit concerned that something isn't right, but wondered whether my mpg will improve the longer I drive the car...

Not sure where you are from jimmyb---the Diesel doesnt need a 2 month check up-( Who told you that??) Fist check , service & Oil change 12 months or 9.000 miles.Mine is now on 19,000 miles well run -in & had 2 big services at 9,000 & 18,000 miles. Your economy will improve as you break in the engine ( 5,000 miles upwards) I tend to cruise gently & yes if you boot it & race, as I do sometimes, you will see your economy drop!If you see your guage dropping, switch your ECVIC to " Miles till empty "& see what your pute calculates your tank has left. All fuel guages are notoriously unreliable. My Old Skoda Superb could read empty, in the red with the warning light on---& I could still do another 85 miles ( In Panic mode lol)

Cheers for that. I'm in the UK, and I was told by the dealer that they'd call the car in for a two month inspection (no charge) to make sure everything is as it should be...
I'm not too convinced by the readings on my EVIC, as my gauge is currently sitting mid-way between empty and 1/4 full and the EVIC tells me I only have 51 miles left. Not believing a word of that, but then again, is it worth the risk?!

Thought that might be the case with over 5000 miles though...will keep plugging away!

Thanks again

jimmy b If you do get a 2 month check ( Actually sounds like a good idea) Raise your concerns with the dealer & see what they have to say. Your engine is still probably quite tight at the moment so things will probably improve the more miles you put on . In 2007 a team drove a Patriot & a Compass ( Diesels) from London to Berlin on one tank of diesel , with enough left to carry on to the Polish border. Just normal driving!!

I'll definitely raise it, as although I probably won't attempt it, my Patriot wouldn't get anywhere near that far away on a tank. On motorway/highway driving, it'll drain a quarter of a tank in around 50-60 miles at about 70mph which is a bit worrying!

Thanks for your replies though - and apologies for hijacking the thread a bit! Will let you know what the dealer says next month.

I managed 39.8mpg today which consisted of a cold start, 4 miles of town driving, then motorway for 35 miles at speeds of between 70 and 80mph, peaking once at 85mph. If I cruised at a steady 60, take away the cold start, then yeah, I reckon mid to high 40's for that kind of journey. I brimmed the tank and the computer started off saying I had 323 miles to fill up, then as I drove on, it went up to about 360 miles. This is normal behaviour for these systems based on my previous cars.

But so far - the gauge and computer seem to agree pretty well.

No probs mate --We are all here to try & help each other----I've allways found it helps to quote info from JeepPatriot.com when talking to the dealer...they must know that thousands of owner/drivers cant all be wrong!

Got a 2008 crd limited and at 36,000km am getting 7.0-7.3L/100km no problems.
Was getting as low as mid 6's prior to the lift and adding coopers on.

We have had a few problems with ours.
1. 2 x intecooler hoses changed as leaking oil.
2. At the same time the dealer thought(not 100% sure) that the turbo was causing this so they replaced the turbo also.
3. Since the fix no leaking hoses etc... so that may have been the problem.
4. Right front CV replaced under warranty 2 x times. So far this 3rd one is holding strong now for about 6,000km.

Are you sure that all the hoses are connected?
Could have a slight hole in one of the hoses.
KJ and JK CRD owners have reported loss off power as you describe and a lot of them have been due to the hoses going with less than 9,000km.

The dealer is taking the car back in on Tuesday. I've had a look, but there is nothing visually out of place under the hood, so I will defer to the guy with the laptop and see what it says.

The good news is that I'm now getting 41.9mpg - Thats about 6.7l/100km for all you imperially challenged nations... :)

OK - just thought I'd post a quick update on this. Just got the Jeep back from the dealer. They plugged a laptop into it - no fault codes found. However, they updated the ECU software, and replaced a fuel filter - all under warranty cost.

So far - so good - it's purring like a diesel kitten...

That sound good---Lets hope its cured?? Mines going in for early Fuel filter change soon -( when my drivers door lock comes in , to replace the dodgy one on the car)

Hi M30TGV
Concerning the sudden power loss problem. The exact same thing as you describe has been with me for 18 months.
How did your dealer solve the problem. he has tried 'flash upgrade' which I guess is a software upgrade but as yet the problem persists

I have had the loss of power whenever the check engine light comes on and then this power loss goes as soon as the car is stopped and restarted - I assumed it was a feature of the check engine system to limit the power. Each time the error code has been to do with the fuel cap.

Misfiring at around 3000 rpm is nearly always a fuel filter issue.

it's called limp mode i think

62k km on mine.(prod 2008 end of year,first reg feb 2009)
no problems up to now.
by the way,i have a DPF-diesel particle filter.
do you guys in the uk or aus have it?
i hear that when it regenerates itself you have a little power loss and some smoke off the tail pipe.
never noticed it up to now,but what M30TGV discribed happened to a friend of mine with a BMW X3 diesel and the dealer said the DPF couldn't initiate regeneration by itself and had to be rebooted by the computer in the dealership.software issues.
