So I have an 09 Jeep Patriot, and I have this terrible creaking sound in the rear. It's constant as I'm driving especially at low speeds, and it's really loud as I'm taking off slowly, or even as people get in and out of my Jeep. It's originating from my passenger side. I replaced both the rear struts today because they were leaking, just hoping it was the issue. Well it wasn't. I don't really want to take it to a dealer because that costs and arm and a leg, so what's the next thing I should look to replace? I have access to a garage so I do all my vehicle repairs myself, so of course I'm looking cheapest options first... thanks!

My squeeking issue was sway bar bushings. The oem ones tend to mushroom out after a while. I'd look at those first being the easiest and cheapest to change. Also, you could look at the toe and lateral links, spring perches and strut mount. Try a good pressure wash under there to get any dirt out first.

You might think its coming from the left rear but sound has a way of fooling you sitting in the driver's seat.

The only way to pin it down is to stand or crouch or lie down beside the vehicle and have someone else do the action that gets you the squeak.

Over and over again until you have moved around enough and actually found it.

No sense in tossing in new parts until you eventually manage to fix it, do the diagnosis first, then fix it.

I actually did do this. I had a friend haul down on the bumper and also the roof rack while I laid on the ground with my head right up next to the passenger side suspension. That's why I initially thought it was the strut because it creaked in proportion to how hard we hauled down on it. Perhaps this is a hint to what it actually is? I really have no idea what else would creak proportionally to how hard we rocked it. Now that I know that struts aren't the problem, I'll move onto other possible parts.

I know this is a while ago but to anybody that uses the search box to find out why their Pat's rear end is screeching, my issue turned out to be a VERY dry control arm bushing. However while it was in the shop, I also had my toe links replaced because they were very visibly deteriorating. It does have 100,000 miles on her so I guess it was time, but worth it to keep her on the road. It was a pricey dealer bill, so hopefully everyone else can do this themselves like I wanted to.

Cheers! :)
