trade wrangler for patriot?

Hi everyone. I just joined the forum and wanted to get some opinions on a possible Patriot purchase. I bought a new '06 wrangler in January of '07. I had always wanted a Jeep and really wasn't fond of the new '07 style, so I purchased one of the very last '06's I could find. It is a lot of fun, but I never plan on going off-roading and am finding that the "open air" thing isn't for me. Have any of you traded (or sold) a Wrangler and replaced it with a Patriot? I test drove a couple of Patriots last week and really liked them, but when I sat down with the salesman to look at the numbers, their trade in allowance for my Wrangler was insulting! I can't take that much of a beating.

Any thoughts?

All I can say is that with gas prices soaring, even the Trail Rated version of the pat does way better than the Wrangler. You wont loose out; instead you will gain more space, more mpg's more looks and more fun. If you dont off road like you said, then you will have it all in this patriot.

I'll trade you my '08 Legacy for the Wrangler. If you're not going off-road, you won't need the Patriot ;)

Definitely sell it on your own, maybe to a HUMMER owner. The good thing is that you're in no immediate crunch to sell it, so you can wait till you get a decent offer.

I agree with the others. If you still owe on the Wrangler then you are still most likely in the negative equity area. Wranglers have been appearing all over the area for private and dealer sale in the last 4 months and most are still sitting there. If you can break even with a private sale of the Wrangler and you can swing the budget that is probably the best you can hope for right now. Otherwise just keep driving it until you either 1) save up some more cash or 2) pay the Wrangler down to the point you have something to trade in.

Thanks for all of your comments. I do owe a bit on the Wrangler, but not much. I bought this as a fun vehicle and am not strapped financially, I just don't like to loose money! I thought it might have been a hot trade in as it only has 3000 miles. I think I'll hang tight, especially since the '09 Patriots are supposed to have some improvements to the interior. If I sell privately, any thoughts on a price?

Wranglers have a pretty high resale value. Trade in is always going to be a $2-5k less than what you can get on the market on your own.

Wranglers have about a $10k spread between a base X model and a loaded Rubicon. If it was about $25k new, you might get $18-20k for it on your own.

Shop around on Autotrader for comps, and don't forget about KBB.com or Edmonds. That's where buyers get info on what they should be paying.

I traded my '05 Wrangler SE in for the Patriot and I do miss my Wrangler--but I was always worried about people ripping the top and stealing my stereo again. I will get another Wrangler or CJ someday but it will be a hardtop model. I made out ok at the dealer I went to as I had told him up front about the insulting offers some other dealers tried to give me----mine only had 21K miles and had some upgrades--one dealer tried to offer me $12K for it as he said NADA (what the dealers use now instead of Kelly Blue Book) showed that was all it was worth. I promptly asked for my keys(took some 4 letter words for them to finally give them back) while the salesman and manager kept trying to tell me oh well lets work out something--I told them I had already told you what I'd do if you insulted me like that and left. Sometimes it takes going to a few places to get a dealer who won't mess with you. A '05 or '06 Wrangler if it is still clean can go for upwards of $17K on a dealers lot and thats for a base model. The Patriot has it's place but it definately has it's limitations and as long as you know what they are you will have a fun time with it.

I CAN RELATE!

bought an 06 Unlimited and loved it. but when circumstances dictated that i get something with better MPG's, i looked at the Caliber, but i wanted AWD and the only way to get that was the R/T model. most of them either had leather (NO) or gray cloth w/BLUE or RED INSERTS (DEFINITELY NO) so i started looking at the "MK"s. no Patriots in stock so i checked out the Compass. the looks of a Compass had kinda grown on me, much like a wart. so i found one i liked (no power stuff, just 4X4 with the bigger tires and tinted windows).

after having it since last November (the week after we got it, drove to KC for Thanksgiving weekend) i have come to really love the car, suv, Jeep...whatever it is. of course i've made some mods (16" Pat steel wheels with BFG M/T's and mudguards) and have more in the works (RRO Lift Kit, Roof Basket with mounted spare, Hella Roof Lights), but it gets me where i need to go, comfortably, economically and safely. :smiley_thumbs_up:

regardless, just keep in mind that 'It is what it is'....a FWD vehicle with P.T. 4X4 capability. remember that, and you're good to go. besides, even with that, it sure is better than a stick in the eye! :icon_rolleyes:

P.S. i do still miss my Unlimited, especially THIS time of year, when i would take the top off for the spring, summer and fall. down side of getting a Compass without the 26E pkg? no power accessories? NO POWER SUNROOF! BUMMER..................:(

I own a modified '02 Wrangler as well as the Pat and have often thought of which I value more. It is always the Pat. It can do everything that I do with the Wrangler but better and with fuel efficiency. There is an undeniable special fun factor with the Wrangler that I cannot describe. I am pricing mine (the Wrangler) with Edmunds and will probably sell soon also.

Hey KZMAN, my wife and I own an 03' Wrangler and a 08' Patriot and the Wrangler still is the favorite.

If you don't like the open air feeling just buy a hardtop for it, that way you will still have the option of removing the top when you like!

We get 18 to 21 MPG's with the Wrangler and 24 to 28 MPG's with the Patriot. Considering the fun factor we'll take the Wrangler!!

By the way....The All Breed Jeep Show is being held this weekend the 19th and 20th in York Pa.
A great time for all Jeep enthusients!!

rubicon trade here.
i wanted to get three things out of the deal.
1. lower monthly payment.
2. factory warranty.
3. better gas mileage.

my rubi had 9,800 miles at trade in time.
it was a 05.
nice thing is i was not "in the bucket" on it.
i knew it was worth more than i owed.

after dealing, i got 20k for it.
all equity went towards the patriot.
plus they were running 2.5k cash rebate.

lowered my monthly payment $100.
now have 3/36 warranty.
better gas mileage.

i did love the rubicon, it's a icon in the jeep world.
but it was killing me.

test drove the FDII patriot and loved it!
so far, still do.

maybe in the future, better job etc...
i would think about another tj or jk.

but for now, NO REGRETS.

Wish you the best with your Patriot. I just Wish they would make a Jeep like the old CJ5 and set it up to get better gas mileage. I am sure they could do it but they seem more interested in making the Wrangler larger every year. Its now actually larger than the XJ Cherokee. Just does not make since to me.

I have both an 08 Wrangler Unlimited and an 08 Patriot and I get 18-21'ish in the Wrangler and 22-25'ish in the Patriot (highway mind you since the JK only gets anywhere from 13-17 in the city the way I drive I guess) but overall like the Wrangler more but probably only because I have both. The Wrangler rides rougher and isn't as peppy as my Patriot but each has their ups and downs.

I am mixed on the "fun factor" as I do really love driving the Patriot and for me my JK has a lot more cargo space but that's because it's an unlimited.

Pound for pound though if I could only have one , in this economy, I would probably get a Black Patriot Limited or Compass Ralleye. I have even contemplated trading the JK up for an 09 limited if I like them enough.
