So have had my silver patriot for a week and someone backed into it and scratched the back bumper pretty bad it looks ok, but the black plastic is showing through. Where can I get a new bumper or how hard is it to repair scratches on the plastic bumper?

Thanks for your time!

First, welcome to the JeepPatriot.com forum. Congrats on the purchase of the new ride. Obviously the "someone" didn't fess up to the dasterly deed. Have you contacted your insurance company? IMHO, you should report it to your insurance company and get them to have it fixed. I don't know what you have as a deductible, but I'm sure it will be be a lot less than you purchasing a new bumper from the Jeep Parts department at your dealership. and then doing the repair/replacement yourself.

If you do the repairs yourself, and want to document the process, I will gladly assist in helping you post any photos of the repair. Just PM me...

sorry nothing useful to add about getting the bumper fixed, but once you do get it fixed put a hitch on and keep a receiver in it with a ball mounted. Next time the damage will be to their bumper not yours hopefully. Good luck!

My decutible is $250, never made a claim before, but I am really thinking about it, the only bad part is then will it be listed as in an accident and depreciate even more. I looked all over online, but can't find any bumpers to even estimate the cost, my guess is about $800-1200. What do you guys think, it looks easy to get off, but what are you gonna a do. Our first new car and damaged with 500 miles!:(

Thanks for your help guys.

I had the same thing happen to me, except they actually warped and dented my plastic. I never got it fixed, but got three quotes, for replacement, it would cost nearly $750 to just paint it, would be about $110. I opted for neither, but I have a steel blue pat, and the plastic is black, not a big difference in color, and not real noticeable... first of many I'm sure. I will end up keeping my pat for another 5 or so years, at least.....

If you posted pictures, I believe it would help us help you in deciding in whether it is truely that bad of damage. If its something that you can live with, live with it. If you have full insurance (which im sure you have because its a new vehicle), than dont be scared to use it. Some companies have forgiveness for things like those. Just give them a call.

Just to add, The bumper itself costs right around $400 but you need prime, paint, and blend it in (no two batches of paint are 100% correct) which brings it up to the $750 (installed)

You should be able to get away with just a paint job though. less then the $250 deductible, and if they say the same thing, you will be stuck with a $250 deductible, and an accident reported to your insurance company, making the price go up for up to three years, not worth it IMO

Just take it to a body shop and get quotes, they don't cost anything. Then you can weigh out your options with everything down on the table.

It depends on the damage to the plastic. If it is only a scratch and the plastic itself is OK it is very easy to fix. A body shop and match the color and make it 100%

If the plastic itself is damaged you may need to purchase a new part.

DrugRunr supplied some excellent info and part numbers. If you send a picture we can get you the right part #.

the color of the bumbers from the factory are usually black plastic with sometimes a gray primer.

hope you can get your rear bumber repaired inexpensively. sometime the paint, materials and labor are more expensive than the BUMBER!:icon_rolleyes:

It's been pouring here since yesterday, so i will take a pic when it stops. its not really bad, looks like they scratched the paint on the back driverside around to the rear wheel well, some black shows through, and there is one guage the size of a dime not deep. luckily no cracks. set up an estimate for tommorow, i'll let you know how it goes! Thanks for everyone's help. Now i know what it should cost, so can not get ripped off!

with body repairs, most shops 'assume' its Insurance Covered, so let them believe that. just ask for an estimate for YOU to pass on to your insurance company. insurance companys will not pay more than "List" price and in many cases they receive a discount off of "List", so the shop will only charge "List" and not any 'inflated' price.

also, when comparing prices, compare 'apples to apples' in that GET PART NUMBERS!. they make all the difference in the world. i looked at the 'estimate' someone else posted above and they had a "List" price of $315.00, but when i looked up the part (just used the most common rear fascia part number as an example...68021290AC) and came up with only $265.00. not sure what he meant by "Cost".....probably a 'wholesale price' and NOT "DEALER NET". like i said, make sure you're comparing 'apples to apples' and get a couple (3?) estimates to compare if you want to make sure you're not "getting ripped off".....GOOD LUCK!

P.S. if the damage 'isnt' that bad', they may just repair it rather than replace it.

I had a big scratch from concrete on my 96 jimmy plastic bumper, and simply bought the matching spraypaint from Canadian Tire and painted the black to green. It was enough of a fix for me.

Of course, this was on a 11 year old truck, and the scratch was my fault. Since it's the rear bumper and a hit and run, your insurance should cover it so long as you have a police report of the accident.

dont plan on towing

but exactly why i have hitch with hitch step,
to protect the rear bumper,
now if i can only find something to protect the front bumper, so far front tow hooks stick out enough for flat straight bumps

They may come out with a front mount hitch I had one on my Cherokee. works great for parking a trailer in a tight spot or as a tow point that is much stronger than a toe hook. you can also get a mount for a winch that mounts in the hitch like a ball mount.

Have looked at front hitch mounts

want one for attaching simple plow, and winch,
problem with the pat, is any hardware for front hitch has to come very low under the oil cooler and skid plate, any practicle front hitch would sacrifice too much front end clearance
