Foe the handle, you could simply drill two small holes an inch or two apart and loop a piece of cord through them and tie a knot on both ends underneath.

Great idea - - I have some 1/8" diamond plate that should work fine. WWW

To make a handle that doesn't look like a handle you could glue a magnet on the bottom (underneath the slat) and then just keep another magnet in your glovebox that could be your "handle" to extract the tile when needed. That way it's pretty much invisible if you're looking into the cubby.

I did this mod, and it works pretty well. I used 1/4" MDF, with some black shelf liner on top. I still need to play with it a bit, but it works quite well. The upper compartment is the right depth for CD case, if you angle them just a bit.

What if you just drilled a finger-sized hole somewhere in the tile, that when covered with the mesh liner material would effectively conceal the hole? That way when you wanted to open it, you could lift up the liner, stick a finger in the hole, and lift out the tile.

here's an idea for some of us in more "liberal/conservative" states haha. cool idea though! View attachment 2454

Great idea! I think I'll try this but I'm gonna try and use some form of thin black webbing for the handle, so it is inconspicous. Thanks for the idea.

Remember, it is just a name.
Can't put drugs in there, the dogs will get ya (LEO background BTW)
So does that make you a narc or batf agent?

i like it im gonna do it seeing how i live in the Ghetto in VA in the past three weeks there has been 2 shootings and a liberty broken into.. its time to move

Can you post a pic of the cubby without the mod - I know I can look at mine but I'm not seeing it that well - it's done very well - Nice Mod!!

I want to make my Black Hole more useful.

Thanks for the tips, sleeman. I did this mod yesterday using luan and it came out great. Could only find green, white, or brown grip-type shelf liner at the dollar store I visited (didn't want to go to Wal-Mart), so the final look of my shelf was completed using some left over black spray paint. See attached picture. I also borrowed nosirrahg's idea of cutting a finger-sized hole for access. I have the iPod integration kit and my iPod is housed in the console rather than the glove compartment, so I chose a 1" diameter hole to accommodate the iPod connection wire and a mitten-covered finger. I haven't decided if I'll use the green shelf liner (because the green is noticeable) or typical car trash to cover the hole if it becomes necessary to do so. Now that I think about it, it probably would have been better to cut the hole on one of the extreme corners of the shelf to allow the dark shadows of the console to hide it rather than rely on shelf liner or other material. At any rate, the shelf makes the iPod much more accessible and potentially hideable. Works great!

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread.

Excellent!!! Glad to hear it was useful to someone! Mine still works great after 6 months or so. I mostly use it to keep things out of sight.

Loved this idea. I was at work when I read this, so I went looking for similar materials to make this, and found an old hard plastic sign with holes in the corners, and cut it to those dimensions, then painted it black, looped tape through the one hole that was left in the sign when I cut it, and since it wasn't quite sturdy enough, I braced it on the bottom with a piece of hard plastic. Saved me a trip to a store and it was free!

To look in there, you'd never know there was something underneath. I put my Fastlane toll pass in there and my registration.

Thanks for the ingenuity!
