Been dang cold here @ 3000' on the ridge. Lots of wind last week. Every oak tree for miles is stripped with the exeption of the big one hanging over my gutters, of course. You can feel the snow is around the corner. Pellet stove's been rockin..........

Ive been dying to pickup a 8000w portable generator since my house has a hook up out side and wired into the electrical panel. Just dont want to spend $700 on a maybe. Been in this house 4 years and power only went out once for a hour in 4 years.

depending on whats in your house,
can probably get away with a smaller gen for emergencies,
biggest wattage users in the home, electric heaters, driers, microwave's , electric furnace,
if you could minimize electric hogs like those, a smaller/cheaper gen would work.

2 fridges, Gas Furnace, Sump pump, and Tv and some lights are the minimum. Was going buy this work sheet Harbor Freight provides.

add up what you think you will need,
plus some extra wattage,
during power outage, dont need to run everything,
your gas furnace is probably biggest user,
have alternate heat can use in emergency?
fireplace? space heaters? etc...?
2 frigs? in emergency see about using 1 frig, at night or cold weather could put stuff outside,
milk? invest in some parmalat :)

can try this for estimates of power consumption

I also have and natural gas fireplace as a 2nd heat source.
2ND Fridge is for deer meat and beer. One needs to stay frozen the other needs to stay very cold. There's no way I'm unplugging it. ;)

Had a couple inches when I left home Sunday, and this current snow is not hitting there, although there's a couple inches on the ground here, and supposed to get 4 more inches overnight tonight. Heading home tomorrow, supposed to get 4 inches there, and an inch or so Thursday and Friday.

I'll throw my chain in the Jeep for the driveway, just in case.

I have a generator at home, but not here in Pittsburgh. It's not automatic, so hoping the power does not go off today or tonight. It's a heavy wet snow, so will be heavy on the lines. My lines are all underground, but the rest of the grid is on poles. I just run a 5KW generator, it runs the fridge, some lights and the TV, and the water pump.

LOL! Lucky you! At our house, the power going out is as regular and reliable as the cows coming home, the swallows coming back to Capistrano, Old Faithful spouting on time, death and taxes. You just count on it.....
We have a little generator for the fridge (gotta keep the beer cold), and a couple of lamps. The wood stove is always loaded and ready to fire at a moments notice. I'll need to upgrade now that we have the pellet stove. Things got me spoiled.:smiley_thumbs_up:

I have to check my stock of bourbon, man does not live by bread and milk alone.
I hear you dixiedawg, checked on my supply of Booker's, Pappy 21, Rittenhouse 21yr., and the every-night-drams of either Old Overholt or Evan Williams black label.

BTW, check out the video I hot linked in my bread and milk post above - too funny when people freak out at the first news of a winter storm.

Heading home today, will be fun drive through the mountains, and I threw the chains in just in case my hill is bad, but I doubt I'll need them yet. I usually only need them later in winter when it's worse, with a lot of ice under the snow.

Now that's a really nice list of bourbons, I'm happy with my Jim Beam.

Weather man was wrong again. Only got 6 inches of wet snow. Made short work of it with the snow blower and streets are already plowed so no fun in my patriot.
