I parked in a spot today and someone came knocking on my window... Apparently I almost hit this girl backing out to fix the parking job. She said I almost hit her twice. I didnt even see this car... Which is odd because I looked extra careful this time coincidentally...

Since I got the car though this was something that always annoyed me, but I almost got in an accident and felt like an idiot...

So yeah, am I the only one with rants about rear view vis?

I don't have an issue with the rear view, as I always turn around and look over my shoulder to back out anyhow. What I don't like is the HUGE blind spot on the drivers side rear. You could park a 747 in that black hole. It took me a week to get the drivers side mirror adjusted enough to fairly cover it, and still let me drive safely. And looking over your shoulder to the left to check the lane? Forget it. I can't see a thing.

I removed the center rear headrest for visibility.
Mostly I drive alone or with my wife, only rarely with two passengers in the backseat and almost never with three passengers there.
Also the center headrest was no "see-thru" type as the other two and just annoyed me...

But in this case I think it woulndn't helped anyway...

I keep the back seats down, and whenever possible pull through the parking spots so I don't have to back out. This kind of comes out of me not liking driving around for parking spots.... waste of gas.... so I usually park pretty far out.

Ahhh... Mine doesn't have a center headrest. Could be why I have found the rear view capability limited, but not terrible.

Putting the seats down would gretly improve it, but with hauling the ankle-biters around, not really an option for me...

It is definitely taking some time for me to adjust my driving, but I am getting there. With my old car I used to rely heavily on the rear view mirror and rarely on the side mirrors as they were quite small. On the Patriot it is quite the opposite. I have found myself relying mostly on the side mirrors since they are large and provide a good view.

Im the same way...not even in this vehicle, but in all my vehicles, I constantly make sure when i park I am not in a backing out position.(if I can help it).
If I can't then I always take one last look before i get in the vehicle to see what Im up against, and just utilize the backing out skill set everyone should have before being granted a drivers liscence.
I agree the blind spot is a little larger than normal, but when ever I am driving I always have a good solid understanding what is beside and behind me at all times. My eyes dart constantly back and forth to all 3 mirrors. It's second nature.
The final lane change check is the visual over the associated shoulder.
Can you imagine the blind spot associated with driving a Dump truck or worse yet, a Grey Hound bus?
Our battle is minor in relation to what those boys go through.

It's really not that bad in terms of visibility. Not as good as some I suppose but much better than others.
My gf's FJ has a rear window that is half the height and has a spare tire covering half of the window...that's not fun.
There are a lot of smaller cars where the rear of the vehicle is higher and you can't really see where the hood of the car behind you is so I don't complain about the Pat.

The rear view visibility has been a concern of mine. It is a lot worse than my previous vehicle, so it is something I'm always mindful about when backing out. But the sheer stupidity, or maybe the complete inattentiveness of other people, never ceases to amaze me. Several times in the past month in parking lots, I have started up the Pat and began looking around to see if it was safe to pull out, only to have a pedestrian walk *immediately* behind me, seeminly paying no attention to the running vehicle at all. Is it really that much of a challenge for someone to notice a running vehicle and give that vehicle more than a couple inches of space while walking by? So, without knowing the details of the near accident, Taseal, I wouldn't assume she was completely blameless herself.

very true... whenever I see the redlights (or reverse lights) on a car that is parked, i just assume he does not see me and going to pull out. so I'll wait for them to come out. then you got these ppl who try to floor it through.

I apoligized and said I totally didn't see her, but man! it takes 2 to tango!

for me, its not the straight out, its the 7 and 5 o'clock positions.... this was something I noticed when I got the car, but I said wth I'll get used to it...

my XJ isn't as bad. maybe I had gotten used to that one or something.

Ever sat in a Rogue? I did, at a carshow. I found the rear visibility APALLING. And that was with the hatch OPEN!!! I can't imagine many of these stylized sport-cutes have very good rear-quarter visibility when styling is obviously the first consideration. (I'm thinking CR-V, Tucson, Rogue, RAV-4, even the Compass - all have VERY small rear quarter windows.)

very true.

i guess its just the nature for these cars.

Sure it's a bit of a tunnel back there but I don't think it's as bad as it's made to seem. I find the side view mirrors are more than enough to get an adequate view of what's going on behind me. Plus I never merge left without looking over my shoulder at the blind spot (also not as big as advertised). Maybe it's just me...

Looking over the shoulder, a second nature for me...on a motorcycle, this is crucial, essential, left and right. those two blind spots can be killers. Concerning the rear...well the V with the side mirrors does the job, but still... close and near to the ground objects or obstacles demand a visual head turned check. One should always be conscious about what is all around his vehicle 360° .

Taseal, the rear view of this car is pretty bad, but you will eventually get used to it. You can do as I did, and add little convex auxiliary mirrors to the side mirrors, and a rear-parking sensor to the rear bumper. You can see pictures of them in my pictures in the Gallery section, and they're really useful.

I don't understand how this car has such an awful blind spot with those huge side mirrors.

I installed the mopar rear view camera and I am working with a company to get the factory Navigation radio to accept the camera. Right now Mopar only has this option turned on for the Grand cherokee. There are much cheaper after market set ups. There is even one that puts the video into a rear view mirror.(you replace the factory one with theirs)
