The 1G xB has more front and rear legroom than almost anything on the market today except long wheelbase 7 Series/S-class/LS430, Maybach, etc. The Patriot is quite good compared to what's avialible today, most similar to the 2G xB in almost every dimension with a bit larger cargo area.

The front seats are the second most comfortable I've owned. They are fantastic so far. No opinion on the rear as mine is fileld with child setas. I'd ask my kids, but I don't think that woudl help you much. They don't have any problem falling sleep back there.

Any reason why you don't want the 2G xB? Just want 4WD?
xB legroom (front/rear) 40.7/38
Patriot legroom (f/r) 40.6/39.6

I am 6'3" and have no problem in the back seat of a Patriot.

I was looking at a liberty and a patriot and I felt there was more leg room in the patriot. As posted prior, the insurance is less than on my pontiac grand prix turbo gtp. It helps that it is listed as a wagon and has full anti-lock brakes.

Seats are great. I went with the YES fabric, mostly for the economics, but they are very comfortable and saposibly easy to clean. Since it's only a week old, nothing has gotten split in it yet but is is supposed to be easy to clean.

A real nice thing that I noticed is the leg room for the driver. You don't have to worry about the wheel well cut out, as in the Liberty.

The back seats actually have a 3 stage recline. I have found that people actually prefer it straight up.

The passenger seat folds flat for over sided cargo too.

Great AMERICAN car. Lots of praise. Go get one.

I'm 6'9". and my 6'6" father can ride behind me comfortably. We can't even do that in his caddy STS.

I can't even fit in a wrangler or a liberty- but the patriot is great. The patriot was recognized in a few articles for being incredibly comfortable for tall riders. It has a pump up/pump down seat, which is great when switching between me and my 5'3" wife.

When looking for a car for her, we had to find something I could fit in. Found the caliber, but decided that I didn't want her to drive a 2WD car up here in one of the snowiest cities in america. so we found the compass, which is great for her. After owning it for 6 months, I fell in love with it too and decided to sell my F150 and buy a 4x4 pat with offroad. Still love it.

as far as insurance is concerned, I pay 23% less than I did with my 2WD F150, AND this is a 4x4 trail rated.
I'm by all means not a huge or tall guy, but If I get something I want it comfortable for people in my front and back seats, as I take long road trips on occasion with family, gf's family etc.

So how is the trail rated and crv LOUD wise? I read/saw a few reviews and they said it's way annoying. Would I be better off NOT getting the trail rated, and getting a manual 4x4 for a quieter ride (and better fuel economy)? Also, hows the automatic handle, accelerate etc? I've been driving a manual since I started driving and have grown rather fond of driving manual as well, but If I get a pat, i'm pretty sure I want the trail rated...might as well pay 25k and get the works, AND the gas card :p

I don't want to open up the FDI vs. FDII discussions. Test drive a FDII anbd FDI 5-spd. I suspect coming from all manual trannys you'll prefer the manual, but there are certain clear advantages to the FDII.

The manual 4x4 is getting a solid 20% better than FDII's. The best FDII highway mileage has been about 25mpg with most people in the 20-23mpg range. Best FDI 5-speed is 35mpg, but most people are in the 24-27mpg range. I haven't read many complaints about the noise of the CVT. Seems to be a love it or hate it thing. I never even (wanted to) try it.

The CVT noise is noticeable coming from another car, but with myself rounding out 12,000 miles, I don't even notice it.... I play with autostick a lot, so its slightly reduced with that as well.... Keep in mind the altered gearing in the trail rated is notably noisier...

Also, trail rated IMO is kind of overrated. You can do pretty much anything in a 4x4, you can in a trail rated model, with the exception of water fording... so if you plan on swimming while belted into your jeep... go for it, if your idea of off roading is traveling on a dirt road with some river rock, save the $ and save the MPG and get the manual. This way you'll be happy, get great MPG, and not have to worry about the noise at all. I only got the CVT because I worked in a place where stop and go driving was an every day thing.... and really, I don't regret it at all....

Best thing to do is test drive, and test drive all options if you can...

Have fun whatever you choose.... :)

IMHO, it's one of those vehicles you have to wonder how they get so much romm in such a tiny package LOL. It very comfortable with planty of leg room front and rear.

I know whenever me and my friends are going somewhere, we always take my Pat. So i regularly have four 6' guys in my car and they all love it. We tried taking my friends Scion tC one time and that didnt go over so well:) Everybody who has sat in the back said the seats were great and they had plenty of room. I also like the fact that the rear windows go all the way down.

I think there's fine front leg room for someone who is 5'7" (me). There could be a little wider footwell space, but it's a doublewide compared to the Jeep Liberty's. Headroom is extremely generous btw - I don't know how Jeep managed to get decent ground clearance (9" on the off road), low height (I stand taller than the pat) and good head room all at the same time (congrats Jeep engineers).

Back seat room seems "ok" but nothing great. The front seat mounts seem to get in the way of the back seat person's feet when they try to kick out. Ok for shorter trips and probably kids, but I wonder what it would be like for a full sized adult back there. There's also a fairly large hump in the back center (they put the cupholder on it).

Unibody and low body/seat height. Compare the 9" of ground clearance of the FDII Patriot to a Liberty with simialr groung clearance. In the Patriot, there is so much underneather that is about 10" above ground. Body on frame SUVs have rear differntial and maybe shocks !@ 10", but so much more has another 5" of clearance.

Love the room!! I'm 6' and fit perfectly in any seat...I have two car seats in the back for the kids, and they don't complain!! (boy is 6, girl is 2)....We traded in a 2001 Grand Caravan Sport and our insurance dropped $20 a month!!!....go ahead, splurge...go and get yourself a Patriot!!

Anyone driven behind a Ford Escape and noticed the rear suspension stabilizing bars hanging down at a 45 degree angle? Makes a mockery of whatever the ground clearance is supposed to be.
Absolutely have noticed that! It is the precise reason I didn't seriously consider the Escape.. that design ruins the clearance alright. I wouldn't want to be out in the desert crawling over rocks and into and out of holes worrying about that thing snagging and ripping the rear suspension right off the vehicle. The Pat is much more functional and straightforward.
