Well my wife and I went to go look at a 4x4 Latitude with the 2.4 here in town. Unfortunately it was already sold. So they handed us the keys to a FWD Latitude, since that was the only 4x4 they had. We have never been in or driven a Patriot and wanted to get a feel for it, to make sure it meets our needs.

Everything was great, ample room and ride comfort was much improved over her Hyundai Veloster. The major complaint I had was the noisy under powered engine. This thing was a dog. I may be a little biased, since my daily is a 600HP supercharged Tundra, but this thing could barley merge into traffic on the HWY. Smash the gas and I thought it was going to blow up it made so much noise and not going anywhere.

So we got back and I told the sales guy my concerns and I don't see this thing towing anything. Well we soon realized it had the 2.0 motor. That being said the 2.4 only has 15-20 more HP/TQ. Doesn't seem like a hole lot more. Is the 2.4 that much better in the real world? I know it's not a race car, but that 2.0 was just sorry.

Anyone have some real world experience with the 2.0 vs 2.4? The other dealer in town has a 2.4 FWD. I may try to see if I can test drive it. The original dealer is trying to work out a trade with the one 6hrs away in Oklahoma. Hope they can work something out and save us a trip. I just want to make sure the 2.4 runs and performs a little better, especially since we plan to tow 1500lbs.

I think the 2.0 is good only with FWD and manual shift. You put an auto and air with this package and you add weight plus stress on the engine. If all works out I am going to order a bare bones FWD Pat with manual tranny. Dark Blue. Next Summer before the plant stops making them. The list price has to be the best cheapest bang for your buck going.

Use your 600HP Supercharged Tundra for Towing . You can by a Toyota Whatsyoumaycallit with a V8, that will merge onto the freeway no problem. Why mess around with a little bity 4 Bang Her ?

I test drove the 2.0 and 2.4 fwd when I was checking them out and it is a big enough difference that it is worth it to get the 2.4. It is an econo BOX, so steller performance it has not. but its decent for what it is: a boxy cuv. Other than a turbo charged engine, I don't think you're going to find too many 4cyl engines out there that knock your socks off. they are not meant to. they are meant to get good fuel economy.

I tow our boat with my Tundra, but it is a street queen. Lowered 5" and rolling on drag radials.

The Patriot will be my wife's daily/weekend camp/ ATV trailer hauler. Her Veloster rides like poo on the low pros and is pretty cramped. Fun to throw around corners and good on mpg, but she needs some groumd clearance and more space. Other than the weak noisy power plant we liked everything about the Patriot. I was surprised how much leg room the backseats offered. For a smaller SUV it felt very roomy. Like I said I'll try and drive a 2.4 this week and hope they can get that dealer trade for the 4x4 worked out.

The 2.0 is too little for the patriot, 2.4 is good but I know I'd jump into a v6 if they made one for the patty, I'd think a 2.0 Turbo would be okay but not just a doggy 2.0 to pull a CUV around

2.0L blocks are only for fleet mileage, enough for basic transportation. Not sure why you would compare a pick-up to a Patriot, pick-ups off-road are a joke, the Patriot will blow your mind off-road. No one I know expects to tow much with independent suspensions, even Jeep has tow packages for all the models, question is How much do you WANT to tow?
I can pull a 14' Whaler, not a 24' SeaRay.
What do you really want the Patriot for, towing, daily driver or both on and off-road?
May I suggest a SRT GC if you are looking for HPs to spare and tow at 75 MPH.

I was recently shopping for a new small SUV and after test driving a lot of them, I can say this: acceleration on the 2.4 with 6-speel auto transmission is just adequate. It's not the car's strong suit, but it's ok and not something terrible. Acceleration is not the reason to get this car. Value is. It's cheaper than many of its competitors, and gives you more features for the dollar. It's also the cheapest of the small SUVs that are off road capable. And IMO, it's a very nice looking car and far nicer and more classic looking than just about everything else in its class -- probably the last of the "classic" looking Jeeps, other than the Wrangler.

For me, I don't go off road and I was looking for a higher end Patriot in the upper 20s, and I soon realized there are some other cars that are probably a better value. But if you are looking for one less than 25k, the Jeep is a really good deal, especially with all of the current incentives being offered. Just don't buy one with a sunroof -- I read too many bad things about leaks here on this forum. If you are interested in the Patriot, I also suggest checking out the Subaru XV Crosstrek. It has much different styling, but overall is the closest competitor to the Patriot.

I test drove both and decided I HAD to have the 2.4L.

It has better gear ratios and much more low end torque.

I wish I could see a dyno graph for a FWD Patriot on both motors to see where the 2.0 lacks and the 2.4 goes.

My 2wd with the 2.4 and stock tires goes fast enough for me. The CVT sometimes has a hard time keeping up though.

I bet a 2.4 with the new 6 speed auto or the good old 5 speed manual would be FAST!

I would only ever buy a 2.4 pat

My 2.4 with CVT has plenty of acceleration, unless you are wanting a drag racer. you really do have to learn how to drive the CVT and it will perform for you. What you do NOT want to do is jam your foot down on the gas pedal and expect it to give you sub 6 sec quarter miles.

I am not downing the Patriot or expecting it to run like my truck. I just mentioned that because I am biased. Just about everything is going to feel slow compared to a 600 HP pickup. I would love a SRT8 JGC, but they are 3x the price of a Patriot and my wife would not like filling that gas tank all the time with 93 octane prices.

We are looking to tow a 1500lb boat and ATV trailer weighing about the same. For the money the Patriot can't be beat and will meet our main objectives, more space, good MPG, and mild off road/snow capability. Still waiting to hear back from the dealer on the one we want. Hopefully I can drive a 2.4 this week, just to see how it sounds/feels. :smiley_thumbs_up:

If you have the opportunity to go back and drive the 2.4 6 speed, with an open mind accepting what it's made for, you'll be more than happy. After reading a lot of the reviews, it had far more power than I was expecting. Out of the hole, it's no rocket ship but I gotta tell you, once it's rolling, I can easily pass a car with no sweat rolling off my brow or white knuckles.

Well we test drove a 2.4 6SPD and CVT. Both seemed adequate and much better than the 2.0.
We decided to go all out and get the FDII Latitude since they had one at a nearby partner dealer. Should be picking it up this afternoon or tomorrow morning.

I ordered wheels and tires already too. I want to order the RRO lift, but I don't know if I will have time to install next week. I know there will be rub without it, but not sure if I can get by with the pinch weld mod for now.

These are the wheels

and got some 235/70/16 Toyo Open CountryAT2 black sidewall

They should be close to the stock weight, but look so much better. :)
