I don't have the crossbar on my Jeep patriot and still have my rack from the neon with all my accesories.. so basically from what I understood I only need those.

Also, Can I install the lowriders without the transversal bars ?

Thanks

Eric

Yakima Racks - LowRider are the way to go

Yes Eric, the Yakima LowRider system is the best way to go IMO (I'm 99% sure we don't require the LowRiderMax version)...the MightyMounts (for those with factory crossbars) are plastic and look too weak to support much, where the LowRiders are metal.

I did quite a bit of research and I plan on getting this myself and completely removing my factory crossbars. The factory crossbars are a little limiting (Jeep doesn’t offer that many roof rack accessories and they are $$$). Yakima systems offer the most options and the best mounting for our (Patriot) roof rails…I didn’t like how Thule wanted to attach their system to our roof rails/crossbars.

Someone from an REI outdoor gear store opened a box for me and let me fit them to my Patriot so I could see how they worked. As for mounting them without the crossbars...I think it could be done but it's the crossbars that square up the LowRider mounts and keep them from vibrating out of position, which could potentially scratch your roof. You'll see once you go to mount them.

The best deal I could find was through Amazon.com...$134.10 for set of 4 LowRider mounts with free shipping and no sales tax. Locking cylinders along with all other Yakima accessories are priced well too.

Got any photos?

I'd be interested in how these look, and some photos including accessories and carried items....

still no rack

Unfortunately I haven't purchased mine yet...I'm looking to get rims and tires for off roading first plus I've got some upgrades to my motorcycle coming first

I’ve seen a picture or two with someone that has a roof rack, I believe using the Thule mounts…I think it was quiff69's ride…other than that, just look at the Jeep accessory catalog and other bike rack catalogs for ideas.

When I do get around to it, I'm looking to get either 2 of the SprocketRocket or Viper bike rails (needs to work with disc brakes)...maybe even a basket in the future...just the mounts, bars, locks, and bike rails are going to run around $400 to $500

I'd love to mount off road lights to the bars (front and back)...has anyone done this??? Pictures anyone???

REI.com and instore has 20% off all Thule bike racks! You can go to rei.com and fit your Patriot to the Thule rack. I bought Yakima mighty mounts with the raptor and love them! They are secure. No problem carrying 2 Trek mountain bikes. The Thule 20% sale is nice in case you were ready to pull the trigger.

With the MightyMounts you are limited on the accessories you can add (i.e. you can't use fork mount bike mounts) and you're limited to 30 lbs per bike...not that they won't work, just giving everyone a heads up.

The REI thing is great...if you're a member of the Co-op, you get an addition 10% back on all your yearly purchases the following April...that puts it at a 30% total discount. I'm awaiting a Yakima sale myself.

You'll definitely want to compare how each company (Yakima & Thule) attaches their rack to our factory rails.
