I currently own a 96 XJ which I love
Its my 2nd, the first went 222,000 miles

I have the Selec-Trac Full Time 4WD
So I can run it on the Rain or Dry pavement

But the XJ is a "gas fire" and I eventually may consider a Patriot

Welcome! My advice is do your research before buying a Jeep. The crowd here is very slanted toward the Patriot. Obviously. Poke around the forums and do lots of test drives. There is good and not so good things to be said about Patriots, Libertys, Wranglers and the like.

Currently own a Cherokee
Wrangler has no AWD
(AWD is more important in places that get more rain & NO snow)
Liberty isn't much more fuel efficient

My goal is better Gas mileage
and some ability to get off road

If its another Jeep it will be a Patriot in some flavor
or it will be a Competitor

Jeff,

Welcome to the JeepPatriot.com forum! Please, as Quasi suggested, put your seat in one and drive it. Do the same from every Jeep dealer you can find. Check their inventories and keep up on it. If you can't find what you you like then you can order one with the bells and whistles you want like Quasi has done. I'm getting between 23 to 27 MPG here in Jacksonville. Mostly, city drives back and forth to work. I've had my Patriot since the end of September and got a pretty good deal from my dealership, and along with the lifetime powertrain warranty, this was a very good vehicle for me. I enjoy walking out to drive it in the morning and again from work in the afternoon.

i am in no hurry to buy

I own outright the XJ I am driving now
and I would have to travel over 500 miles every week
to justify a car payment vs Gas $$$

I want to see what Jeep does in MOD II of the Patriot
(that is if it survives the cut, though I expect it will)
