Two weeks ago, we had our first light coating of frost on our car windows. I went outside and scraped off my wife's Patriot, then my Civic with a plastic ice scraper.

Later that week, I noticed the back window (they are factory tinted) looked like it had some smudges on it. When I cleaned off the window, I discovered that the back window was scratched! The scratches are deep enough to catch a fingernail on.

There was no grit or sand on the vehicle or ice scraper. I even checked the Civic's windows (which I did after the Patriot) and there were no scratches on its windows.

Has anyone else experienced or noticed this?

I'm going to swing by the dealership to get them to take a look at it; I'm not expecting much satisfaction from them. They'll probably say road grit will be to blame.

I've never owned a vehicle with glass soft enough to be scratched. Even though they're tinted, that should be sandwiched between the layers of glass. It just doesn't make sense...

Ohhhhh. Not good. I have some marks on my windshield and will be cleaning it today. Wish me luck!

Got the Jeep back from the dealership -- they attempted to polish the back glass. It is better, but I can still see the scratches and just barley catch my fingernail in them. I'm going to continue up the ladder and try Chrysler customer care.

I don't consider scraping your windows with a plastic scraper out of the ordinary. I've never had a vehicle that had glass windows and were scratched while removing a little bit of frost.

Just a bit of an update. Anyone else experience this?

The windows suck on these jeeps my back window blew out in a wind storm and they had to change the back window and every other piece of glass due to it getting makred in the wind and i just feel the glass is very soft in this jeep vs my chevy trucks.

I do know that a plastic scraper will scratch the window composite. Seems odd, but those scrapers with the copper metal edges are said to be less prone to scratching. I have one. But, I'm lazy. I use a pump spray de-icer, Prestone, I think, from Walmart, and cover the offending frost or ice. I warm up the car for a moment, turn on the rear window heater coil, run the wipers, and run the side windows up and down. Now, a half-inch of ice may be a different story...

Removing the scratches? Unlikely.

Just cleaned the Pat after the snowstorms we had last week.
The back window has scratches like yours. From the same ice scraper I use on my other car.
I'm going to wait till spring to take it to the dealer.

Take it now or you may well regret it when they won't fix it later. I'm beginning to worry that this is going to be another leaking dome light-esque issue. I've either problem yet but you all have me worried. If a ice scraper can do that, imagine what a trail tree can do!

oh! oh! should another poll gather statistics on this issue?

Four months to go before decision time...2 major interrogations before buying.

Leaks and now window scratches....Hummmmm, I love the Patriot but....don't want these kinds of problems. Hope solutions are on the way from Jeep team. Very bad publicity.

Worrisome.

I have a plastic scraper that has a long handle and a squeegee thing at the other end. I have only used the squeegee on the rear windshield. The front windshield has survived my ice scraper so far.

I too will monitor this closely.

Thanks for the heads up.

It's Winter in Finland and windows ice quite fast, meaning i gotta an ice-scraper daily. I looked and looked, but didn't see any scratches anywhere on the windows. However I do use the rearwindow defroster and block-heater (air is warm faster inside) meaning maybe my windows are cleared out easier than what it would be without using the tech.

Mostly it´s not the icescraper but sand you move together with the ice on your windows wich creates the scratches.

I agree with Rends. My drivers side window has scratches on it. A few are vertical. I drive on dirt roads and there are alot of trucks. I've got a couple of swirl ones too, but it's the same window. None on the others. I hate it when I role down the window and hear that scratching sound. I've seen this a hundred times on older cars and trucks.
