We took the Patriot out into the Mt Hood National Forest here in Oregon on state road 45 to be exact. I wanted to see how far up the road we could get before we had to turn back. Once we hit the snowline it got deep really quick and we had to turn back once the air dam was more of a snowplow. The Patriot did really good though. I had a set of chains but the studded tires were enough. We met up with a couple of Wranglers who offered to help us turn around. I declined and backed out till I could turn around in a clearing. Bet they didn't think a Patriot could do so well. The only thing I wished for besides more ground clearance was a low range. When I got bogged down the Patriot would stall out unless I gave it lots of rpms. I could also smell the clutch getting a bit hot. It did ok though and once it got moving the 4wd just slowly built up speed as it modulated the brakes with the ESP. I never tried shutting the ESP off in retrospect. The wife loved the snow so we will be going up again.

Tread lightly and be prepared for the conditions.:)

Great Pics... Thanks for sharing....

Wow....Great pictures! I think they should give an off road version for the five speed stick, in your case that extra inch of clearance could have made it even better! Congrats on your beauty!

great, cool, wow, crazy, sweet, rad, bad ass...... these are the words i could think of to describe your pictures. Wow, if your pat that is not trail rated could go through that, then i can imagine what a trail rated can do. keep it up.

I have a Patriot North (4x4 FDI manual similar to yours). Fully disabling ESP by holding the button down for 6 seconds and locking 4x4 really helps. Not as good as low, however it is especially useful in snow and sand.

I also got to help out a stuck Ford truck. I thought it was kind of funny that me and a Subaru Outback did fine but the big 4x4 "OFF ROAD" truck got sideways...:)
Yeah, that is what happens when you don't have enough weight in the back on a pickup truck and you get on the throttle or the brakes too hard and too fast or just get out of the groove. I did it several times on the farm as a kid in snow and mud. The other vehicles have a more balanced weight distribution and therefore don't swing around as fast or easily.

WOW, nice pictures! I'd be interested in hearing from you if you try turning the esp off or partially off in these conditions. So Far the times that mine has stalled out have been with the esp all the way on in these kind of conditions. I've been turning it off and have had better luck.
