It's normal.

Well 'normal' as in has been reported on numerous Patriots.
Check one here also.

I guess that is where the baby chickens are kept.

its not because of the heater, its just the bulbs in there creating heat. I noticed it when using my 'parking' lamps as driving lamps. Its no big deal, just heat having nowhere to go, so it just resonates in the 'cubby'. Again, not from the heater, just the bulbs when you have your lights on.

Hey! open up the hood and you'll see sort of a 'heat deflector' right behind the middle dashboard area...

I think that heat comes from the engine 'cause you can feel it even when the lights are turned off.

Heat in the cubby hole

I think it's all related to the interior dashboard lights. I noticed it when I first got my Patriot last summer- but during the day it always seemed to be cool. I then tried turning lights on and -sure enough- it got hot. Then I tried dimming the interior (and dash) lights and the more dim I got them, the more the heat diminished over time.

I'm guessing that this is just occurring on the 2007 model year Patriots..? It sounds like one of those first-year kinks that gets addressed by the time the vehicle begins it's second year of production. Is anyone having this problem on a recently-built Patriot?

Interesting posts so far..

Our 08 doesn't have that problem from what I can tell. After reading your posts, I had to run around for quite a while (at night) and checked that cubby hole when I finally got home. Not hot at all. I take it that it's not a universal problem then?

Maybe multiple hours on end would do the trick? I haven't taken it on a long trip in weeks but if I do, I'll be sure to check that again and get back with ya if I notice it.

Heater Core - Hot By Right Leg Under Dash

Just brought my 2008 Patriot on Friday 5/30. Minimal miles on it, but today Mon. 6/2 after inch'in back from work at a slow stop and go pace I suddenly got a warm rush of hot air down by my right leg. It is coming off of what I believe to be the heater core? See pic. The silver metal behind that black cover (cover as well) were too hot to keep your fingers on. Upper 70's with all windows and sun roof open. AC was off and blower motor was off. Air setting was bi-level. Engine temp was not all that hot, at least not by the gauge and the distance from work to home is only about 17 miles. Any idea's what this is by the gas pedal and why it would be baking?

Hi,

I have an 08 Pat with just over 1000 miles on the clock. The cubby hole seems to be cool at all times although when I have the lights on the centre dial for the blower heats up so I recon that it's only the lights.

Took a two trip a month ago. On the turnpike I noticed the knobs for the air system were very warm. Thought maybe the car was in 4x4 even tho the light wasn't on. Stopped at a rest spot. Started off again and the knobs were cool to the touch for the rest of the trip. Still can't figure it out.
