Ok, so my Jeep is currently at the dealership/service centre for the third time since I purchased it, new I might add, late December last year and I was hoping that someone may be able to enlighten me as to why, for the third time, they have told me nothing is wrong with the car.

I suppose I should start at the beginning…

My Patriot has driven perfectly fine until the steering wheel started to lock when I turn corners or stall when I am slowing down or have pulled up at an intersection, traffic lights or round-about.

I returned it the dealership/service centre only to have them tell me that nothing was wrong (they hooked it up to the computers and whatnot) and that they had set it back to factory settings. They asked me the standard questions such as, did you have the clutch in/in first gear/etc. The stalling and locking happened another nine times when I took it back and asked them to do something as a new car should not be doing this and I was not the only driver who had experienced it while driving my car. They did the same tests and what not, still found nothing and so gave it back to me.

I was then driving around a round-about when the steering wheel locked and I nearly had an accident. That afternoon I called them and told them that they needed to do something. I then ‘googled’ the issue and discovered similar things had happened over in the US but while cars were going significantly faster. I emailed through all the information to the service centre, spoke with them on the phone about what had happened, presented them with a log book I was keeping and l listed information about what gear I was in, the time, rev count, etc. whenever these incidents occurred.

I have just been on the phone with them; they have had my car for three days, they were informing me that I can come and pick my car up and that there is nothing wrong. The car had been put through tests, phone calls to Chrysler had been made and Chrysler was happy with the results.

The person basically stated that I couldn’t drive correctly as I was most likely going into third gear not first, or that I wasn’t revving the car high enough when turning corners. Admittedly I am only 24 and haven’t been driving for very long compared to others, but I do know how to shift gears and I am not the only one that it has been happening to, my dad drove the car and the same thing happened and he has been driving for over 40 years.

Sorry for the long winded post, but I would love to know if I am just a crazy and a somewhat crappy driver or that there may be some sort of glitch with my car that I can get fixed!

Cheers!

Your not too crazy I have seen this problem before at work, the vehicle would stall and the steering wheel would lock because the car is turned off, but it was the hardest thing to find to fix, we did give the car back to the customer numerous times, having them come back, talked with Chrysler, they even contacted Chrysler, just a **** show all around, I know it's easy to get mad at mechanics, I have been on that side too. Have you tried driving with a tech there or even the service manager to prove the problem exists and show them how to get it. But what fixed the jeep at my shop was the engine wiring harness, from factory some wires were rubbing and shorting out causing the stall out

Right before it dies have you noticed what sounds the car or engine is making? Does the Patriot sort of chug and gasp, then die? Or does it just flat out die altogether, with no sounds or anything preceding?

You may want to contact a service center in another town, too. They're not all managed equally, at least not here in the states that is. ;)

When it stalls there is no sound, it simply cuts out. The steering wheel has locked without stalling, the ESC light has switched on, but the mechanic didn't say anything about that. I have also driven with the tech guy, as did my dad and the they have driven it with me in the car but it was completely fine, no stalling or anything.

That right there rules out any mistake you're making with the clutch/driving. As you're probably aware, if you mess up on shifting the car it will lurch, sputter and eventually die after 1-2 seconds. The problem your describing is that the car cuts out, no warning, which to me means it's something electrical. I would definitely check out the wiring harness or have the shop look at it. I'm no mechanic but the more I think about this it sounds like some type of short.

There's a wiring harness below the mat on the drivers side floor, although not sure if it;s in the same place on yours. If it's right hand drive it might be under the passenger floor. Sometimes water gets to those wires from the floor and they can short.

i would agree with aurthur
bad shifting would stutter before it dies
same with fuel line problem
sounds electrical to me,
loose wire/bad connection,
or even a loose ignition could shut it off suddenly under pressure of a turn,
if you can replicate it,
ask the shop if they can install a diagnostic in the car,
basically plugs into obd port and records whats happening
pretty common here, not sure how common such diagnostics is over there

So I picked up my car today with the understanding that they couldn’t find anything wrong, electrical or mechanical. They put it through a number of tests and drove it around, one of the guys took it home, but it didn’t still didn’t ‘stall’. The mechanic did give everything a good clean and so hopefully that will do some good!

I then informed them that I had joined an online forum and posed the same questions and they suggested that it could be the wiring but was told that the exported Jeeps are different to those that are built for the American market and that the wiring and everything is different and that there is a very, very slim chance that whatever happens to cars over there would be replicated here in Aus.

I also asked if there is something that could be attached to monitor what was happening, again I was told that that would not be possible, as they don’t have, nor have they heard of, anything that would do that.
Although it is rather frustrating that they couldn’t do anything, I understand that it’s hard to fix something if they can’t see what is wrong.

Hopefully it will stop after today and thanks for the suggestions!
