at least the transmission. It's an 07 with the 5 speed..ya the one with the extremely high pitch whine from the gears that were cut wrong..
Now the f**king thing is jumping out of fourth gear. It's done it twice on my wife.
We bought it used and there is no warranty on it. My plans are to let it go until the spring, replace the transmission and sell this POS. I'll never own another one.

Looking for advice or just ranting?

So, let me get this straight, you bought it used, gears wine, and it slips out of gear.

It's probably just a linkage adjustment for the slipping out of gear.

As for the noise, guess you missed that on the test drive. Blaming the car for you failing at a test drive is not the cars fault.

Did you check the tranny fluid level? That can cause noise and slipping out of gear.

I'll own up to missing the whine on the test drive..
The slipping out of gear is apparently a well documented issue with these transmission..which I wasn't aware of..until it happened to me.
Unfortunately I keep comparing the compass to the 98 Rav4 it replaced...
The 98 Rav4 that we owned for 11 years, bought used and never had any issues with except for the normal stuff like brakes, 2 struts...that still had the original ball joints and tierod ends on it when I sold it.

My rant is the fact North American (the big 3) car makes still haven't caught on that producing flashy junk full of neato gadgets we don't need isn't going to keep the lights on..
You would think after the US gov't bailed out 2 of them that they would have gone back to the drawing board.
Instead..they keep making vehicles that fall apart with in a year.
My Sierra isn't much better then the Compass.
I've always believed in buying "made in North America"..long before Toyota and the other foreign set up shop here..
But I'm tired of throwing good money after bad.

IMHO it's hard to judge a whole car model production or a manufacturer based on 5 year old vehicle bought used. I had my patriot for years and that thing was a tank. Traded in couple months ago for a Compass and so far I'm really happy.

And consider that I don't just commute. I pit 6.000Km on the last 7 weeks, including a hunting trip to west PA yesterday where the Compass performed like a champ in and out of the wood, with the reward of the cargo full with a couple big deer.

So if I was in the marked for another vehicle with the same capability and price range, I would stick to the Patriot/Compass for sure. I'd love a GC, but it is just financially impossible for me now.

All I can say is good luck with your Compass, and if in the end you decide to get rid of it good luck with your next car.

Be happy you didn't buy a Landrover or a Hyundai ;)

How do you come to your conclusion that the gears were cut wrong? That sounds pretty ridiculous.

Seems like you learned a lesson about buying used. If you don't know what you're doing, bring someone who does. Manual transmissions are easy to diagnose. You messed up. Not the big three.

They were cut wrong or shimmed wrong..I've read so many threads, info about it I forget what the cause is.

I've been buying and working on my cars for 30+ years..My screw up was not taking it on a highway during the test drive. Having said that..a vehicle that was 4 years old when we bought it shouldn't have a junk transmission in it..
I'm not the only one with this problem.

07 standard trans has high pitch whine. 08 trans has messed up synchronizers ..

My aunt owned a '97 Toyota Rav 4 for quite a few years. That was the biggest piece of crap I have ever driven in my lifetime. It started falling apart at 90k miles. I easily convinced her to sell the damn thing. She replaced it with an XJ Cherokee. Now she drives an '05 Jeep Liberty. She loves how much more reliable her Jeeps have been. (By the way. I am still driving her Cherokee)
Talk trash all you want about American car companies. Go buy another Toyota used. And enjoy the junk they still make today. That will leave us more Jeeps to buy. Your Compass was obviously abused before you ever got it. Learn next time how to actually buy a good used car. How a car is driven determines how long a transmission will last. :icon_rolleyes:

Damn that was a year ago!

@lil_green_compass

I'm dealing with the same issue with an 08 5 speed Patriot with 97k. I'm trying to trade it in but every dealership is lowballing me because the whine is very apparent to them yet "typical" to jeep.

Funny thing, I took it to a jeep dealer to get an estimate on a trade in and they said they wouldn't even take it, That should tell you a lot about how they stand behind their products! I owe $6,500 and most dealers are willing to give $4000 for the trade. I'm debating on fixing the problem and selling private party instead for maybe $7,500 but every shop wants to charge $700 to just see whats wrong with the Tranny. I'm just looking for the best scenario to reduce my losses.

I even started this thread which would of helped both of us....ahh well
