I was just reading up on the owner's manual section 5 pg. 247 in the NOTE: section that it says something about it is recommended to use premium fuel for off-roading! Is this true? I thought that you did not have to use premium fuel in this that it doesn't make a difference? Any input will be great!

I tried premium the last time I went off road and the performance increase was significant. I assume that when in low range the ignition timing is allowed to be advanced beyond the normal range if the knock sensor doesn't kick in. I would guess there is an increase in HP of at least 10% based on my seat of the pants comparison.

The Patriot has a wide range of variable valve timing and spark advance timing and is quite aggressive in it's mapping. This means it is quite happy with either low or high octane fuel. It gets significantly better torque output with premium fuel.

If you are off=roading, especially at higher altitudes, or in any situations where you want the most torque output use premium. If you are doing day to day normal driving or mild off-roading amd want lower cost use low octane fuel.

Wow, that is VERY interesting. Thanks for mentioning it.

If any of the computer geeks out there could figure out how to re-program the Patriot to affectively use premium fuel without being in low range, I would be interested.
