Hi everyone!

I just got my first jeep patriot a few months ago, brand new from the Jeep dealer in Cerritos CA! Less than a week later I started noticing a high pitched whining noise coming from the engine when off the highway. It happens around 35mph and the noise gets lower in pitch as I slow down. It doesn't happen when the car is at a stop. The whining noise sounds like a siren or an ambulance coming up in the distance, and at first I would always turn around and look until I realized it's my car. I took it in a few weeks ago and several technicians looked at it and said it was a "normal transmission noise". What I'm wondering is

HAS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED THIS NOISE??

The guys at jeep said they'd never heard of it. And it seemed harmless, but now my CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON and I have LESS THAN 2000 MILES ON MY BRAND NEW CAR!! I've only had it for less than 3 months. :(

Because this is the first time I've ever bought a brand new car, and it was quite an investment for me I'm feeling pretty worried about it!
Any advice would be HUGELY appreciated.

And...the whine and the check engine light may not even be connected.

It would be unusual for a check engine light to come on due to a transmission whine...if that is what it is.

Most often a check engine light in a newer vehicle is something simple, most often an incorrectly replaced fuel cap, gas cap. even if the cap is subsequently replaced correctly it take a number of engine off/on cycles for it to go out.

But, just in case, document everything in a journal...who you talked too and what about on what date at what time. Any resolution, stuff like that.

The dealer should be there to help and support you through things like this...even if it is only to educate you on the vagaries of your Patriot, they should explain it to you so you are comfortable and understand the explanation.

Still, write it down in a diary...then you at least have a record of bringing it to the attention of the dealership if they miss something or worse, blow you off when it actually is something.

After driving for long distances, when I stop for gas I will hear a similar noise. When I start the Jeep back up I will hear a whining/whirring noise as you have described, and it is unsettling. It has only happend a few times on long trips, so it will be hard to replicate. Next time it happens I am going to turn off the A/C to see if the noise is related to auxiliary cooling fans

My fans make a similar noise to what you described MrJeep. I've been able to play around with a couple things when it happens, I'm fairly certain it is indeed the a/c, but the only thing I have found to resolve it quickly is just turning the fans all the way off and back on. Not even sure how to go about describing the sound to a tech if I wanted to warranty the noise.

Is yours really ridiculously loud like mine(the few times it does happen)? When I first heard it I was wondering if it was the CVT... but I really suspect cooling fans.

I think it has really loud electric cooling fans. When I've heard it it has been really loud and thought it was the CVT too. I am thinking though, if it were the CVT the noise should be consistent and constant. Next road trip in July I'll check to see if turning off the A/C stops the noise. If it is the electric fans, that is the weirdest sounding cooling system on a vehicle that I have ever heard...

That was my thought, too... if you happen to find a way to reproduce the problem, I'd love for you to post it. It happened today when I stopped off at my local gas station. I parked, ran in for maybe 5 minutes, and after starting it back up it was doing it. My A/C was on in Floor/Defrost-mix mode (cause I think it's on in that mode?) and it didn't stop until I turned the climate controls all the way off and back on. It gets louder and faster if I turn up the fans, and slower and quieter the opposite direction.

But mine seems to stop, as if it's a temporary thing, but only if I "restart" the system... but then again, I've never let it go on for more than a minute or so with it doing that, since I get irritated quickly by 'out of the ordinary' noises, heh!

Does it sound like your noise? Or is yours relatively constant? In the lowest fan setting in neutral, I can hear the fans' motors, but it's definitely not what I seem to be experiencing *once in awhile*, which I worry about, heh.

Wonder if this is my new issue, too?

I posted about this in another message thread, but my 2007 Patriot 4x4 just started making a whining noise too. It's an automatic CVT transmission model with about 68,000 miles on it right now.

It still seems to be driving normally, but I've noticed as I speed up, the constant whine/hum noise gets higher in pitch, and gets lower in pitch when I slow down. If I take my foot completely off the gas, no matter what speed I'm going when I do it? The noise immediately gets much quieter. Even lightly pressing the gas again makes the sound immediately come back.

Engine RPM seems to have nothing to do with it.

With all the complaints on here about weird noises that wind up being a bad CVT, I'm starting to worry. But then, many of the sounds people describe are more like scraping noises at low speeds, which is definitely not my issue here.

Well, to follow up with *my* issue ... I took it to the dealer last night for them to examine. I got a call back this morning. They confirmed the CVT transmission is failing, and now we're waiting on an inspector from my extended warranty company to take a look at it, before they agree to pay the claim on it.

Argh! :(

Nice thing about the Chrysler extended warranties is you don't need an inspector to come out.... if the dealer says it needs to be replaced, it gets replaced

My Jeep Compass Does the same its the CVT Transmission starting to overheat.
Everyone with this problem needs to call Chrysler Customer Service 1 800 334 9200 and report it, as CVT Transmission overheats, slows down, High RPM, and high pitch whining noise. The more we call the more they will look into it. Also ask them if there has been any others with similar problems on their computer, if they say no, they are lying. Tell them to look into the last 8 VIN number
CD588748 , which is my vehicle, and then ask them why they are lying? We need to all come together on this. I know they are lying, because there are youtube videos and forum complaints. Now you know why they are replacing them on the 2014 models.

If anyone has fixed this, or comlained about it through the dealer or by calling Chrysler, please post any and all information of your last 8 VIN, reference #, dealer, ect. so we can all reference off of it. Thank you.

my 2011 pat cvt, fdII is doing this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOX-ufuwYiE

driving me CRAZY! like clock work, whenever it's hot out and on uphill highway incline.

tranny, cooler, rear differential, loose guard, OAD pulley... WHICH?! arrrgghhhh... this GD Jeep. :(

if it's serviceable under warranty that'd be great, but dealing w/ dealer w/ intermittent problem which requires heat and that they drive it into santa cruz mountains sounds sketch from a time equity --> will they actually be productive and fix it PoV.

32k miles.i plan to, but wanted to have a definitive conclusion since this seems to affect many pats; particularly since Chrysler has been very dismissive on this issue to many.

i think i have it now 'narrowed' down to tranny (in general?), cooler, rear differential, loose guard, OAD pulley, and CVT fluid. ;)

you think that's an easy fix and or waranty related? it won't be acting up when i bring it in, so I'll def need the video.

Mine did/does the same thing. I thought it was the AC compressor. I observed this happening and hopped under the engine. The Compressor is located next to the oil filter. It wasn't the compressor. I was convinced it was the compressor alas its a cooling fan. It was low on coolant and only happens when I run the compressor and when it's hot outside. Didn't do it new. The car is a 14 with 28k
