I have a brand new Jeep Patriot Latitude 4x4 2.4 liter 5 speed. There is less than 4,000 miles on this ride and I am having a few issues with it. Mainly the transmission does not go into reverse well. It makes a clunk into reverse gear and looks like the stick is in reverse and then I let off the clutch and there is a low grinding noise and it pops out of gear. Its an intermittent problem so the dealer tech's could not replicate it right away. I was lucky and had it happen when I was at the dealer for ordering an accessory a few days later. Now it happens every day when I have to attempt to get it into gear two or three times when I need to reverse. The stick has also had clunky problems with first gear to second gear with clunky operation from fourth to fifth. I actually had it shift on the freeway from fourth to fifth and it had felt like a gate that allowed it to go into third gear instead of fifth and jumped the RPM's and I quickly put in the clutch to prevent the red line pinning. This happened three times so far. I have a Chrysler case going and I plan to take it in again for the tech's to fix the problem. I am so glad I got them to experience the reverse problem. This is really disappointing that this brand new Jeep has major issues and I feel that it needs a new transmission with the clunky transmission operation and grinding happening. The first two hundred miles I was breaking it in so gently it was working fine until the reverse issue started.

sad to say, but the reverse thing is common in the 5M. Mine doesnt really do that as often, now that I have 25,000 miles. I also experience the clunky shift from 1-2, but after it warms up the shifts become smoother.

Been there, done that... me too @ 19K miles.

I've experienced this in most manuals, and it is normal. It has to do with the way the gears happen to line up when you stop. Some times going into reverse will be easier or worse depending on the way the gears align. As said above, shifting into first and then reverse should work.

What I have always done is shift into reverse, then while continuing to gently pull the shifter into reverse I slowly let off the clutch, until I feel it go into gear all the way. Completely normal!

I had the exact same issue with my new 2012 pat 5-spd. I took it into the dealership and asked the service manager to test drive it with me. He replicated the reverse grind and it took 1 out of 6 reverse tries to actually get it to grind so he said not to worry about it and that the reverse detent is still new and needs to be broken in. I can say that the reverse gear is less of a problem as the car puts on more milage so this detent issue might be true. Try coming to a complete stop and waiting a few seconds in N then pop it into reverse. If that doesn't work then go back into N and try it again.

I took it into the dealer and they replaced the shift assembly. I drove to work and parked then tried reverse and it did it again. It felt like it went into reverse and it was not and popped out of gear when I let out the clutch. At this point I assume since other people have the same problem I guess i just have to deal with it. I love my Jeep but its annoying that I have to try a few times to get it into reverse. The quirky shift to another drive gear and then reverse seems to work. Thanks :)
Also my car was clean when I brought it to the dealer and they give it back to me dusty and speckled everywhere in yellow bird crap. I asked why did they not clean my car and they said they washed it yesterday. I didn't have time to wait for them to wash it again.
