I asked the dealer about a locking cap and was told that it's close to impossible to siphon gas out of the Patriot as is, so save the money. I haven't yet tried to prove him wrong, maybe when I'm bored I'll give it a shot.

All new vehicles, 2010 or 2011 and up have vapour recovery systems in place.
This was to avoid each gas station from having to install the vapour recovery system in the pumps.

Now, I read this a while back, can't remember where and memory is not what it used to be but I'll assume that the apparatus contained in the filler spout will interfere with fuel stealing somehow.

Notice, however, that you can't smell fuel while gassing up a new vehicle anymore?
I do. Plus mine makes a different sound as it nears full...different from my XL7 for instance, no more sound of fuel sloshing in the pipe, just a sort of...sound that is different.

I still bought a locking gas cap to make sure people can't dump crap into my tank. I got the Mopar locking fuel cap, which looks identical to the original one. The only real difference is there is a key hole in the middle and it is keyed to my ignition key. It hangs off the door just like the original one

Aussie cars get the locking cap by default. I find stuffing around with the key a bit annoying, and would've preferred a remote locking system on the flap instead. But I suppose the locking cap is more secure.

How much did it cost?

It was $65 on eBay (from a dealer), which does seem a bit high, but included in that price was keying it. I gave them my VIN and they keyed it to my ignition key.

Since 2006, not 2010.
Well, there you go...thanks.

I was poking around on eBay (from a link someone posted here) and I saw loads of sellers offering the keyed gas cap...some a key that wouldn't start the vehicle, no chip, and some with the chip and they programmed it to your vehicle so all your keys would both open the fuel cap and start your Patriot.

A lot of gas thefts I'm hearing about lately involve punching a hole in your gas tank. Maybe because it's too tough to siphon from tanks on newer vehicles? I haven't tried siphoning from the Patriot yet, and it's the only vehicle I have newer than 2006. I don;t actually siphon though, I use a small battery powered pump.

Makes me glad I have skid plates :D. That being said, I'm sure they could go from the side if they really wanted to. Then again if someone is going to punch a hole in a tank, they will probably go for a big truck. Not much point going after a jeep with a small tank. If they are lucky and my tank is at the half way mark, they might get 6 gallons out of the ordeal

This one is in Az but I think there is another one in W Va.

Thanks MrJeep44. I'm going to check with a local dealer first but if they are overpriced I'm going to order one from ebay.
