Does anyone know the history and in particular the logic behind the names Jeep have given their various portfolio of vehicles?

I am new to Jeep but since buying my Patriot I have taken a lot more notice of Jeep in general and in doing so have become fascinated with the various names of Jeep vehicles. I am talking about Cherokee, Liberty, Patriot, Wrangler, Compass etc (are there any others?).

At first I thought these names were meant to represent war-time analogies, which made sense given Jeep’s war-time history and rugged exterior, but recently I have started to think it is more about ‘exploring new terrain’ or ‘being the first to claim certain terrain’, which I suppose ties in with the whole 4WD angle.

I’d really appreciate any info anyone has on all of this, and in particular any references (articles and the like) to the topic that might be on the net. I tried a search the other day and got bugger all – maybe I was using the wrong key words in my Google search.

You're right, it does seem like they're wartime analogies. Except for the Compass, which was given its name because women need to have a compass to find their way back to the kitchen! :D

Ha not bad mate

But relaly, Compass at first glance sems an odd one out name for Jeep but then when you think about it you need a compass to be an explorer and mark new territory

The vehicle's are in a sense "All American" and the names they have been given represent several aspects of the American spirit.

Wrangler - 19th century Cowboy a rugged outdoorsman, rough and tough and can go anywhere do anything.

Cherokee - one of the most majestic Native Indian tribes in the U.S. Powerful warriors yet graceful and beautiful people.

Liberty - Marketed toward women at first, the word liberty is a common theme among products aimed at women, yet it also embodies the American Spirit of freedom and liberty. And with its capabilities can give the average SUV owner a new sense of Liberty as they hit the trails.

Patriot - Ok, any question about how Americans and Patriotism go hand in hand...oh wait the democrats have made out the word “Patriot” to mean “Racist”. just kidding! Patriotism is central to our history. They may be new to the Jeep brand but opened a new lane in the crossover market.

Compass - You can't go four wheeling or exploring without a Compass right???

How did I do? I can elaborate more if you like. This is one of my favorite subjects!

Sorry I skiped the models no longer produced, The CJs, Jeepster, Scrambler, Commanche, Waggoneer, the old Mail Truck, and that stubnose van looking thing.

.....was called the FC. Foreword control. The cab set on the chassis ahead (foreword) of all the mechanism, and they just named it for how it was designed mechanically.

There were DJ, delivery Jeep. Willys Utility wagon. (self explanatory) Commando which was basically a CJ6 with a different, more car like body. (very similar to the XJ Cherokee in size and shape)

I've always thought the color palette would reflect military vehicles. Navy Blue, Army Green, Marine Tan, Coast Guard White. Special Ops Black, Air Force "storm cloud" Gray, and so on. :)pepper:commie bastard Red? ) LOL
