x2 on the copper plugs. And changing them is VERY easy.
I think there's a how-to floating around on this website that describes how to do it. Looks very similiar to doing the ones on my '07 Focus. I always use di-electric grease and anti-seize, hand guide the threads to start, hand tighten, then give about a 1/2 turn after. Never too tight. What gap? 0.45?

OK, now you have to replace the antenna with a black shortie, paint your muffler black, get a cage carrier for the roof, upgrade wheels, tires and anything else you can think of, find somewhere on the vehicle to use Plasti Dip, agonize over what kind of oil to use, scour eBay for aftermarket HID light kits and when you get all that done report back for page two of "must have" modifications.

Snort.

Seriously, you have to get a dangler air freshener for the rear view, tho. May I suggest a saucy number called Black Ice...not to presumptuous on the nose but not at all hesitant to get the job done.

Have fun with your Jeep, I sure am with mine.

This made me laugh! Been there, done that with the XJ already, and still do it. I didn't think my mom would be the same way, but when we got home and she was looking at the factory fog lights and headlights, she wondered out loud if they could be upgraded.

She has the sickness now...

So rather than start another thread since this one is still on the front page, hopefully I can get some insight on my question.

We just filled it up to full for the first time. Before we reset the AVG MPG counter, we had gone from 18.4 mpg off the lot to 19.8 over a period of about 40 miles at most. I told my mother to reset the AVG MPG after filling up, and it bounced between 18.3 and 19.x on the .4 mile drive home from the gas station. Seems like every time the engine went above 1500 rpm, you could watch the number drop by .1 every couple seconds. Let the rpms steady and drop, and the opposite would happen and it'd increase. Is this normal and will it equalize as it is driven more? Also, even the 19.8 seemed slightly lower than what the sales guy gave us. Considering those first few miles were basically 50/50 highway and city, I'd think it be more toward 24 or 25. 21 was city driving, and 28 was highway. Is this just a matter of time deal or something wrong? Also, I plan on pulling some plugs tomorrow to check their condition. Maybe a fresh set of plugs will help if they're bad. Also, I thought I read somewhere that it's a good idea for a new owner to reset the ECU? Something about going to key on, holding the gas pedal down for a few seconds, then key off? I appreciate any help guys. I hope this isn't going to be an issue... with gas prices slowly going up and up, we don't need a vehicle that supposed to get high 20's on interstate getting the same mileage my 22 year old XJ with a 4.0 gets.

Don't look at that AVG MPG. First, reset your ECU by unplugging the battery for at least 30 min. Then, use your entire tank and manually calculate MPG by taking miles driven divided by gallons put in and compare it to the EVIC to see how accurate it is.
I take it that means the EVIC isn't very accurate? What capacity tank do these things have? I thought I saw a 13.5 gal value somewhere.

Can't speak on accuracy of the EVIC as I don't have one but I heard it could be off. You're right on the capacity.
Cool. I'll be sure to give that a shot, especially if I replace the spark plugs. Also, are my estimates a little high? I'm going by the sales person and the EPA listing with the 21/28 mpg figures. 2.4 CVT FD1. I'm pretty sure it's FD1... it has the autostick deal for the CVT and no "Trail Rated" badge or anything. Considering my mother drives like a turtle mostly (65, sometimes 70) and drafts behind big rigs when possible, I'd think 28 would be achievable.

I have 2010 FDI and EPA numbers are 21/24. I'm right around 21, and on the highway I get 25+ with the highest being 27.9. The optimum MPG speed for the Patriot is 55-60.
Seems about right. Previous vehicle was a 2002 Escape with the 2.0 and 5-speed. I always figured the heavy weight of the Escape with that little 2.0 gave maybe 25-27 highway the way my mother drove it. Combined, she got 150 to a little over half tank before we traded it in. Having the same tank size as the Patriot, 150/7= app. 22 mpg. When she took the Escape on I81, she usually drove 65 and drafted whenever possible. I've seen her do a 180 mile trip on a little over a quarter tank. Figure 180/6 = 30. My point is, I hope the Patriot can pull about the same numbers considering she drives it the same.

Her Escape also managed 170k miles with routine maintenance (minus the clutch BS issue the dealer left us with). If the Patriot is anything like my XJ, it should have no issues in terms of reliability.

Also, thanks for helping me out here with the facts. I appreciate your patience.

So, an update. Tell me what ya'll think.

About 33 miles since the fill up. From the looks of it, gauge hasn't really moved at all, with mixed driving of about 12 interstate, 10 city, and 11 rural miles, the AVG MPG readout was telling us 24.5 mpg. Honestly, I was expecting like 21 or 22. And the number would slowly creeeep up as we drove. I'm impressed. What do ya'll think?
