So, after starting my newbie check in thread and getting some decent feedback, I think we're going to be buying the '09 Patriot we've been looking at for my mother.

Here's a link to said Patriot:

We took it for a test drive around town, and my mom said the steering felt good. Didn't really get up to enough speeds to really show her what I meant about the CVT being a BIG change from her current 2002 Escape 2.0 with a 5 speed. Right now, I think she gets upwards of 25 mph highway and 21 city, maybe a little over. Based on my own research in this site as well as the salesman, she should get upwards of 28 highway with about 21 city. She drives like a turtle mostly (65-70 mph), and trails behind big rigs most of the time on Interstate. The Patriot we might be getting has the 2.4L and CVT with 4x4, so I take it this is FD1, which is good because she only needs 4x4 for bad rain and snow. Engine sounded good and was freshly cleaned off. Motor oil was clean with no milkiness or sludge on the stick. The test drive proved the transmission responsive and quiet, at least to the 30 mph we hit. Tires have good tread on them with 4 discs all around. Only thing she said she doesn't like is she feels bigger in the Patriot, because the Escape did have a little more room. But the heated seats and sunroof make up for it.

After talking the price down to $14,700 and get a 3 year/unlimited mileage extended warranty ($3200), tags taxes and title comes to a little over $16,000. I thought it seemed ok for a 2 year old vehicle with one owner, very well maintained. This is also after our trade in.

So I want to know... what do ya'll think? Any tips or advice for the (hopefully) newest edition to the family?

First thing most of us did was to paint the muffler. Although I bet it never bothered you, but now that I've pointed it out...

If she only drives on the roads, she may never need to use the 4x4 lock as they do really well on their own.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, so correct me, but you're saying AFTER trade-in, your mother would pay $16,000 with everything included?

Honestly, with 70,000 miles, there's no way I'd be paying $14,700 for a Patriot. It could be because I would never pay a 5 figures for a used car with miles, but I just don't see it. I'm sure if your mother shopped around, she could find a newer Patriot with less miles for a similar price, if not a 2011/2010 NEW left on the lot somewhere for a few thousand more.

Actually, I just did a quick search and found tons of local (to me) Patriots with less miles (30,000 range) for the same price or LOWER. I don't know if she's caught up in the options, color, or what, but I wouldn't make this purchase.

P.S. I've driven in Ford Escapes. It actually feels tighter to me than the Patriot. The Patriot has more space to me.

I thought the same thing. And don't forget, patriot itself would only be about $12,000 after trade. It's the warranty we opted for that really goes up there. Plus, after checking the KBB with all the options, we're pretty much at the blue book value for a dealership. I thought it was high too, but considering most other 4x4's around here either got crap mileage, just plain sucked, or had a bazillion miles on it, the deal looks better. I guess location is the biggest factor here.

Edit: Also, keep this in mind. When I bought my '91 XJ with 190+ thousand miles on it stock with a rough body, I paid the guy (private sale) $1500, and relative to everything else that was cheap.

A bit expensive for the pat, it should only be 10-11k used with those miles. A brand new pat is starting at 15k just a few more dollars than a used one with 70k miles?

Even so, not much we can do. KBB is usually our biggest offensive weapon, however even KBB is agreeing with the price. And again, our biggest 'adder' was the warranty, which basically covered the entire vehicle for 3 years, no limit and low deductible.

I called the salesperson and told him the news. He is still otpimistic, and hopes my mother will call them and give them a chance to help her finance. What do you all think? It's not like we can't afford the payment. I think my mother told me she can afford something in the ballpark of $250-$275 a month. She told me it was some debt to income calculator? Idk.. What would you all do? Give the dealership a chance to finance, or just let the rock drop and continue driving the Escape with 170k miles on it?

gladly sell you my pat for $10k
and would be putting that money to good use towards another pat :)

Lol appreciate the offer, but she really liked what this Pat had to offer. The color, the year, the seats. She was looking forward to it. Plus, she wants something with a warranty. After the last screwball dealer we dealt with when we bought the escape, no warranty = no thanks for anyone. Idk... Hopefully an answer will jump from nowhere. I made the mistake of calling her back to suggest financing, and a rant started on about how I was pushing and what not. Just a suggestion turned into an explosion lol.

I do know the price of used cars have been up, when I bought my pat, it was only a couple thousand dollars more than a last years pat with 10k miles. If you like it then buy it, show me the carfax of course.

Just curious as to why the warranty was so much? Because it is a used car? I have an extended warranty on mine that was $1100. But I bought my car new.

It's your decision and I don't know the story of your Escape, but that does seem a little much. The options are nice but if you're just looking for basics, you might find a better deal by waiting a few months. People tend to trade in 4x4 vehicles after the winter is over. Good luck.

Well ladies and gents,

After talking to the dealership like we should have in the first place, we now have a new addition to the family. I'll get pics tomorrow. Drove beautifully on the way home. Handled nicely. Mom adjusted to the CVT well; even accidentally sped a time or two because it's so smoothe. The upgraded stereo is nice, sub hits well. So far, we love it. And I think mom negotiated down a better price as well, with a powertrain warranty. She was a little upset though about her Escape. Despite early issues, it served her well, and she was sad to just "let it go unceremoniously". But I think she likes it.

For some reason, when we first drove it, the AVG MPG was 18.2 mpg. After our 25-30 mile drive, it was up to about 19.1, but the needle on the gas gauge barely moved. I take it the AVG MPG takes a while to readjust? The starting AVG didn't worry me as well because the previous owner drove a lot to the city for his buisness, and likely either hauled material or hauled a** lol. But it's going up... good thing, right?

Fuel economy on the EVIC is only the average since the last reset. Push and hold the little pin-button next to the readout and you'll reset it.

Happy driving.

Thanks! I'll be sure to do so. Also, with the vehicle at 70k miles, I imagine the spark plugs have either been changed only once or not at all. What spark plug does the 2.4L like? I've heard Autolite Coppers float around here a few times. Does platinum cause inaudible ping like it tends to do in XJ 4.0's?

Just stick with plain copper ones and Pat will be happy. As I suggested to another member recently who bought used Pat w/ 90k miles, do everything over: change oil and filter, air filter, AC cabin filter, spark plugs, check brake pads. This way you know for sure when everything would be changed. I wouldn't trust the dealership even if they said everything was changed during the pre-sale inspection.

Absolutely. The brakes are good as we inspected them both prior to and after purchase. All suspension and brakes look solid. I will be doing an oil change soon as well. 5w20, correct? Mobil 1 full synthetic run nicely? Also, will Autolites do well? Or should I get copper Champions or NGK?

Oh yeah...forgot one more thing. Congrats and welcome to the club!
Thanks! I look forward to learning as much as possible here, and hopefully whatever I learn can be passed onto others as well.
