ok so i just got back from the dealership with my girlfriend, and i test drove a patriot...the only thing i wanna know about is the "L" selector in the CVT....its not FDII so what is its purpose....also....the 4WD light was engaged when the car was started...and stayed on the entire test drive....WTF.....i thought i couldnt go over 10 MPH...would it have stopped me...the sales man told me that it was 4wd all the time....we all know thats a lie...but why was it allowing me to drive fast and what is the L factor.

pics are here:

as far as the light goes the t-bar lock is the 10mph limit. Was this engaged during your test? If so that might explain the light and you can sure go above the 10mph the system will just go back to standard 4x4 operation.

The low range also confused me in my test drive. I wasnt expecting that. I went back the next day to make sure it really was there.

You can order the CVT2L transmission which is the same CVT trans that goes in FDII as far as I can tell - maybe this is what these two patriots are.

My question is this then - Is the low gear available in both versions of the CVT transmission? Whats it geared for top speed wise? Or is this the CVT2L that gives is the 19:1 crawl?

I believe I read somewhere that unless you have the FD2, the "L" position will only give you a 14:1 ratio......and obviously, you don't have the benefit of off-road traction control...yada yada yada.

Other content not found on the Compass and non-Trail Rated Patriot models include the CVT2L continuously variable transmission with a 19:1 crawl ratio. The CVT2 features a maximum low-gear ratio of 14:1.
