I talked to the guy that runs a local tire distributer and said that because the
Patriot is a little higher a car tire might not wear right. He said to stick with the SRAs or upsize to the225/65-17. Pluses/minuses to doing this? Recommondations (including the Firestone Grabbers earlier mentioned)?
Sometimes I wonder about people who work in the auuto industry that say things like that. It is like mechanics still saying synthetic oils cause leaks. Just makes me shake my head.
The Hankook Optimo 727's are designed to be used on mini vans and small SUV's as the other poster mentions above even though they are considered a passenger car all season class tire. They are very good for a passenger car class tire used on mini vans and suv/cuv's. I would choose them in less than half a heart beat over the Goodforayear's.
"IF" I end up staying with the stock tire size that came on my Patriot( 215/60R17 )I will probably go with the 727's when I replace the OE tires as frankly they are about the best tire option out there in this size to choose from. Quiet, excellent bad weather ability, good treadlife, and they are affordable. If you will stay with your stock 215/65R17 size, and you don't off road, these are your best bet IMHO.
Upsizing to 225's means you have a whole new world of true light truck/suv class tires available to choose from( which frankly is what should come on the Patriot OE )AND it allows for off road use with appropriate tires. Apparantly 225/65R17's will fit the Patriot's without rubbing so it allows you to get a tire size that provides appropriate tires for the vehicle; on and off road.
The "Grabber" name refers to General tires btw not Firestone. If you upsize to 225's do you want an All Season tire or an All Terrain? Unless you off road an All Terrain is overkill even if you see bad winter weather and they will impact your MPG. If you drive on the roads the majority of the time, and your off roading is just mild, then a good All Season is all you need even if you have bad weather. In 225's I suggest...
All Season:
1 - Firestone Destination LE's. GREAT tire in all conditions! Even bad weather. Last forever, quiet, and very affordable.
2 - General Grabber HTS. Not as good as the LE for tread wear but a good tire overall. About the same $$$ as LE's.
3 - Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza. Overall same performance and life as the LE but will be more $$$.
4 - Michelin LTX M+S2. The old M+S tires from Michelin were the gold standard in light truck/suv class AS tires. They have been tweaked( hence M+S2 )but are still very good. IMO the LE's and HTS tires are as good or even better( probably better )but these are BIG $$$.
ALL Terrain:
1 - Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo/Revo2. One of the best AT's for on road/snow EVER IMO. Great tread wear. Minimal noise.
2 - Bridgestone Dueler AT D695. Called the Revo Jr. by many. Same overall poerformance but less $$$ than the Revo's.
3 - Firestone Destination AT. Very good and affordable AT. Good on road/snow and mild to moderate off road. Reasonable $$$.
4 - BF Goodrich All Terrain AT KO. If you will off road a lot but still use the Patriot on road a lot as well these are the ticket.
