I bought a new Patriot North – Trail Rated 2010 in last October. After a short time I started to ear a high pitched whistle sound. At every speed (over 30 km/h) it starts whistling when I release the gas pedal . It disappears if I depress it even a little… Since then the dealer changed the PTU (kind of transfer case) 2 times. They also change the whole transmission a few months ago. It still whistles... After another road test with their « expert » they decided to change it again. It is back order. Strangely they also told me it was the last time they’ll change the transmission even if it still makes the noise. I will not accept any diminution to the warranty. I’d like to know if someone else had that kind of sound when decelerating .

I had the same story with my last 2007 but the whisler was always present.
They do the tranfer case, then the whole transmission and the sound stoped.
It was out of order at that time too and I waited two week for the new one. I might be wrong but I heard this in Canada. When they change thw whole thing, the Chrysler warranty remain but when the dealership begin to play into the transmission, the Chrysler warranty is void and the dealership is now responsible for it. Then again, i'm not an expert....

That sounds like differential gears to me.

Thanks. I'll see next monday. Before they changed the transmission the first time I told them to check the differential but they prefered to change the transm and the PTU (twice) !!!

I own a 2010 FDII Trail Rated Patriot.

I hear the exact same sound at similar conditions. I'm going to get my jeep today, as they changed the PTU.

I have not driven it yet, but there was a leak at the PTU, and I was told metal chips were found in the PTU oil.

I'm eager to see if this has ruled out the problem, or if I'll have to go through a story like yours!

I'll keep you posted.

Have a nice day.

Update...

I drove my Jeep woth the new PTU. Still same noise.

I guess the problem is related to the CVT tranny and not the PTU.

At least, no leaking. Next oil change I'll let them know (once again) about the tranny noise.

I'm not really any kind of a mechanic, but I am wondering if that could that sound be coming from the butterfly valve in the throttle body? That thing opens and closes pretty fast, right? If you take your foot of the gas I would think it might sound different, or at least everything gets quieter except for that valve that has to move. I noticed a similar sound on my 2008 xB 5-speed, and it was a high enough frequency that I was wondering if it was coming from the throttle body. Thoughts?

I dont think that butterfly valve opens until 3500 rpm.

Hey, I am a liscenced mechanic and I have had a similar problem with a whistle noise about 2 years ago with my Patriot. The rubber protective boot by the hanger bearing that holds the rear drive shaft was torn slightly. not enough to leak any grease but enough that when it spun up it would whistle non stop. Not saying this is what's happening with your Pat's but it takes a few minutes to check. I housted my jeep and ran it in the air above 40kph stood under it and found it right away. Must have got torn while off roading.

Thanks for the info I'll double check that.

And concerning the butterfly valve, I'm pretty sure it's not that since it is a continuous sound.

Thanks for your suggestions.
