We were driving to Glasgow airport from Edinburgh and all was well then all of a sudden we lost power, the engine still ran sweetly at tick over and you could wind the car up to 60 mph but when we hit a hill the reves would increase but the car would slow down and i found myself changing down gear which helped a little, however the speed would still decrease until we were on the flat again. After our holiday I had hoped that it was an electrical glitch and the car would be okay but on picking up the car we found that it was still the same and now the engine management light has come on im suspecting the egr valve but any ideas would be appreciated

Thanks
Philip

you are discribing simptoms that are tipical of mass airflow sensor (debitmeter) fault.
the mass airflow sensor (debitmeter) is the part that controls the airflow through the air filter.
you find it assebled at the end of the air filter.
part no is 05033320AA if you drive a 2.0 CRD vw engine.
the simptoms you describe are typical for a damaged air flow sensor.
happened to me on a golf tdi and to ny dad on his bora tdi.
it is considered a consumable part (like the filters brake discs, aso).
usually gives up around 100,000km but can happen quicker.
they say changing the air filter on time preserves the sensor longer.
don't know if this is your problem, but it sounds very much like it.

I was going to mention my famous cure all for 2.0 litre CRD Patriots!! Check the fuel filter is not blocked, Check the turbo pipe clamps ......( both ends ) !! Glad you got it fixed !!

Found out it was an intercooler pipe that had come of ,its behind the front bumper on the right hand side, the plastic clip had come of I could have done the job myself if I had known what it was.
glad you fixed it and it was only that.
if you would have told me you had a hissing noise,i would have indicated this possibility.happend to my dad's bora twice.i changed the clip myself to a metal one and it never happened again.

gogaudi you are suck a pro. I think this guy who fixed his ride made you feel inadequate. it will be ok. you cant fix everything. LOL.

no man,i'm not a pro.
actually, this thing happens very often to turbo diesels.
i'm alright, just that i hoped to help the guy and he didn't give me all the details...
LOL

I would have thought that swapping to the MB 2.2 diesel engine some of the CRD bugs may have been sorted...but it seems not!!

My 2.2 Diesel 11MY has just started with these symptoms and is booked in with my dealer tomorrow, i'll update more tomorrow.
According to my dealer this is due to pilot error, being in a too high gear for the speed.
But this is the same dealer who has been replacing my power steering pump for 7 months and is unable or incapable of ordering the right part.
