Hey guys,

My local dealer called me today and explained to me He can not Find a manual. Unless I special order one,and the special order lines are closed till September? He did say the sales manager is willing to knock off the $1400 automatic add on. off the top before harsh negotiations began.

What you guys think? Do i go with the auto or the 5 speed?

No.

Aside from the fact the 5 speed is better, if you get the CVT, you will soon realize you do not own the car you want. Do not taint the joy of a great Patriot purchase by getting the wrong transmission.

I went in to my purchase wanting the 5-speed, but I test-drove both, as my wife doesn't care for the manual. Well, she will need to put up with the stick, I couldn't stand the CVT, there's nothing wrong with it, other than the fact that it doesn't fit well with the way I drive.

I own and regularly drive a manual, I love it and prefer it. On a trip down to Florida I drove a automatic Patriot for a week, after driving both I prefer the manual. On something with a big engine like a V8 I would definitely go with the automatic, but with something small like the Patriot it is best to have a manual to have better control of the power and acceleration.

+1 Manual is the only way to go if you want to enjoy your driving. It gives you the greatest versatility. Talk to another dealer. Dealers are more interested in selling you whats on their lots, so either find a dealer that has one in stock or tell your current dealer you will wait.

You've probably tried this already, but just to be sure...

also, when I started looking at Patriots, my local dealer said he couldnt find any FDII's within 400 miles, when I asked for one. A little effort on my part and i found two *at other dealers in the region*, within a couple days. I never could figure out why/how that first salesperson would/could so foolishly lose such an easy sale

I wouldn't necessarily believe there isn't one locally to you just because the salesperson said they couldnt find it

Theres 14 total in my area. :icon_rolleyes: None are 5 speed.

The pro's and con's of the different transmissions have been hashed out several times here, so there's plenty to read from both sides of the argument.

I personally prefer the automatic transmission for my needs. I don't quite understand the talk about "greater versatility" or "more control" - the AutoStick feature works quite well if you think you need manual control over the transmission (which, it turned out for me, I normally don't), and the automatic transmission works much, much better for slowly crawling over an obstacle than continuously slipping the clutch - so there's versatility for you, too.

But in the end, it's all about how you want to use your Jeep that you've bought with your money. I can understand the fun feature of driving a stick quite well. For me, the lack of a low range and the fact I use my Patriot as a daily driver - and hence, sometimes am stuck crawling in traffic, which is something my knee does not appreciate doing with a manual transmission - made the manual transmission a poor choice. Your driving conditions may be different than mine.

I would suggest taking the CVT out for a test drive and really trying to understand the way it works, not just rejecting it because it feels different after the first two minutes of driving. Some people seem to be unable to accept the way the CVT works, others, it's more a matter of getting used to it and then it's fine. Try it out, and see under which category you belong.

I love a manual on my V8... Has so much tq, its alot more forgiving, you have to put effort into stalling it. Its what I taught my wife on.

To the OP, I dont buy auto's at all... if they patriot didnt come with a stick, I wouldnt have ordered it. On something so expensive, get what you want. If you wait a few months, in a year or 2 you will be happy you didnt compromise. Up front the deal may be nice, but down the road you will be kicking yourself.

The link between you and the tranny is mechanical... meannig you recieve instant feedback and an instant change. The autostick has a delay, and the transmission changes gear when it wants to, not when you want to. This all works out to greater control. Its also allows for you to choose what gear you want, and how long you want it for.

As for the bad knee, I can understand that. I have a heavy clutch in my mustang and I sit in DC traffic jams... never bothered me though. I just like manuals because it gives me more to due when driving, autos seem to... boring for me. I dont know what to do with my left foot and right arm :)

I like the manual.... didn't even consider the auto and I drive an auto company vehicle everyday... for the last 25 years.

I bought the Patriot for me and for fun. I plan to do some trail drives and think the manual is as better option.

If I was driving in heavy traffic everyday I may have looked at the auto.

Well you can't get trail rated with a manual, so I have the CVT. I like it better than a lot of other automatics I've had, although it does take a little while to get used to.

Like others have said, each month when you write the check for the vehicle you'll feel much better about it if you get what you really want.

My wife drove the CVT and the Manual. She liked the manual, we ordered a manual. There is a 6-speed manual in our Trans Am. The clutch in the Patriot is light and easy to use. If the Patriot clutch was heavy, like the one in the TA... we might have wound up with a CVT.

I got manual. Have always driven a stick and always will.

I had them order mine special with the features that I wanted. I didn't want to have to compromise anything, and I have the exact vehicle that I want.

Totally worth the wait... imo.

:D

Me too. Well, I didn't order it, but I specified exactly the color and equipment I wanted--and didn't want--and they found exactly what I told them to find...400 miles away.
Always need a manual.

I wouldn't believe him when he says he can't find a Manual. My dealer tried that with me in November 2010. I went to a different dealership and saw one for sale on thier lot! and varified that it was actually for sale! I didn't even shop at that dealership and went to another location 20mins away. They found EXACTLY what i wanted within 10mins. It had to be shipped from 500kms away and i think the other dealerships didnt want to do that so they didnt bother looking hard enough.
