Good morning, everyone...

This seems to be a spectacular community in form and function!

I'll try to make this as brief as possible:

I am considering the purchase of a 2011 Patriot 4-by. I suppose I'm somewhat motivated to buy, contingent upon a good price on the new vehicle and a good trade. If I do this, I'll be coming from a 2002 Xterra SE, which has had little competition among all the vehicles I have owned. It has, quite simply, been a fantastic truck, and still is. Rust/dent-free and mechanically sound, it has about 110,600 miles on it. I put a new exhaust on it this past summer, and it's getting to the point where it will need brakes and shocks. But the real motivator is the fuel situation. We're back up over $3.00 per gallon now, and with a 19.5 gallon tank and 19/20 mpg highway, I'm spending over $50 a week on gas, and I only have a 36 mile round trip commute to work. Plus, the X weighs 4100 pounds, as opposed to the Patriot's 3100. So, I'm looking to get into a vehicle with basically the same comfort and functionality, but with a lower operating cost. In my research, I keep coming back to the Patriot. The other utes in its class do not make sense functionally or economically. Even with the Patriot's smaller tank, the bottom line is a much lower gas expenditure.

Initially, I was looking at Latitudes, but they all seem to be over-equipped with a lot of amenities that I don't want, such as leather/heated seats. I'm in the Baltimore, MD area, and Sports seem to be more plentiful, and very well equipped (17 inch wheel/tire packages and the like, but without the leather and such).

Here's my question, though... I have not found the answer in my searches here:

What is the difference between Customer Preferred Package 26A and 26B? I'm currently looking at three Patriots (on the web) at two different dealers, two of which (at one dealer) are black and identical, with Package A. The third (at another dealer) is Blackberry, with Package B. The blackberry one seems to be better equipped as far as I can tell (with things like a sunroof, which I would not purposefully seek out), but is priced about $400 less. So, I find this confusing and am hoping for some clarification, especially as the black ones (with Package A) seem handsomely equipped, but with no specific mention of air conditioning. I'd imagine they'd have to have it, though.

I have not yet driven a Patriot; I plan to do that on Saturday, weather and time permitting.

The benefit of the experience and knowledge here will be appreciated!

Thanks -

TC

Welcome!

Sorry, I don;t know what those option packages are, but hopefully someone who knows will help you out.

Mine is a basic Sport, with the Trail rated option. It came with A/C, but not much else as far as options.

TeeCat: I had a hell of a time getting what I wanted with the 2011 Patriot. I'm sure you've probably done this, but the best thing to do is go to Jeep's website and go to Find a Dealer and search for the dealers close to you. The most important thing I've found is DON'T BELIEVE the dealers, look at the window sticker from whatever dealer's site you're looking at, that is accurate. Some told me the Jeep had something that it did not and vice versa. I knew more than most of the dealers I talked with. The one I got had package A with the 17" wheels/power/side airbags/CVT, etc.

Sorry I can't help you with your package question. Just something to keep in mind during your test drive. If you drive one with an automatic transmission, make sure to see how you like the CVT transmission compared to the gear transmissions were all used to. Be patient you will eventually get an answer to your question. Good Luck

But the real motivator is the fuel situation. We're back up over $3.00 per gallon now, and with a 19.5 gallon tank and 19/20 mpg highway
Perhaps I am being confused by the use of miles per gallon metric, but aren't you already fairly close to a Patriots fuel economy? Would the fuel savings really be enough to offset the cost of having to buy a new vehicle?

Of course, if you're getting a Patriot just because you want one, then that's different. :D And have fun on your test drive!

Hi, all...

Thanks much for the welcome and the tips. Sam, I am keen to what you're saying and am researching this heavily.

I was able to find out that the A, B, and F basically equate to Sport, Latitude, and Latitude X, so it wasn't really that complicated after all, I suppose.

Perhaps I am being confused by the use of miles per gallon metric, but aren't you already fairly close to a Patriots fuel economy? Would the fuel savings really be enough to offset the cost of having to buy a new vehicle?
Tony, no, I don't think that it's realistically possible for any new vehicle buyer to literally offset the initial investment/outlay/expense of a purchase such as a new car or truck. But the difference between 20 and 26+ miles per gallon is palpable at the pump. So, for all of the X's wonderful qualities and features, I don't see it as being "in the ballpark" with the Patriot at all in that regard.

And there are other factors. As I'd mentioned, I'm likely looking at brakes and shocks in the coming spring, and at 110 K, I start worrying about things like timing belts. So, these considerations beg questions such as whether one should make a preemptive move while the KBB value of an X like mine is still around 6K, and while the new car market is still a bit weak in the knees. So, I'm leaning toward that.

Also, I'm in the enviable position of being eligible to retire in early 2012, and if I'm going to get a new vehicle, maybe I'd better do it while I'm still at 100% of my income.

But it's hard. I love that X and would recommend them to anyone who asked. They're just a bit expensive to buy and operate. It's a difficult decision.

On the fuel economy issue, do you intend to keep your Patriot stock or get bigger tires, lift kit, that sort of thing? If you get the kind of tires I feel the Patriot should have, it's going to affect fuel economy. Not a big hit, but if fuel economy is that important to you, worth taking into consideration. You might want to read the various MPG discussions to see what kind of fuel consumption figures folks with different setups and driving conditions are really getting in the real world.

No, Tony, I won't be doing that. Just like my X, the biggest modification that a prospective Patriot would see would be more "substantial" tires, such as an all-terrain truck tire as opposed to more of a passenger car/touring tire. Up until '08, I had a really nice Dodge Ram and my X, so I might have been able to play about with one or the other in terms of mods, but now the X is a daily driver, as will be a prospective Patriot.

I went by CarMax yesterday with my X. The KBB on it is $6,100, and they offered me 6 grand without blinking. So as hard as this is, this might be the time to move. I'll look at a blueberry '11 Pat tomorrow. We will see.

As far as mileage, before I looked at the Patriot I looked at the Liberty, and based on what folks who had them told me, I would be spending about $2K more per year on gas as compared to the Patriot.

dawg, you're likely spot on. In my research, I investigated the Liberty pretty thoroughly and found that it and my X are very close in terms of the way they're equipped (both 6-bangers) and priced, so were I to get a Liberty, I might as well just keep my X or get a new X. So the Pat, at least on paper, seems to answer my need for something functionally similar, but lighter, and with a bit better fuel economy.

Also, to be honest, I like the profile of the Pat better than the Liberty. The latter seems sort of tall and rounded, while the Pat - I still can't get over this - looks for all the world like a little Commander. It's a handsome little ute, far more attractive, imho, than anything in its class.

kpool, thanks for this. I had not thought of using KBB for this purpose. I think I have a handle on it, but likely did it the hard way. :p I'll be looking at (at least) a blackberry Sport tomorrow, with the following:

OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT
Blackberry Pearl Coat Exterior Paint
Customer Preferred Package 26A
Tire and Wheel Group
17-Inch x 6.5-Inch Aluminum Wheels
P215/65R17 OWL All Terrain Tires
Power Value Group
Power Heated Manual Fold Away Mirrors
Body-Color Door Handles
Body-Color Liftgate Applique
Power Windows with Driver's One-Touch-
Down Feature
Speed-Sensitive Power Door Locks
Remote Keyless Entry
Illuminated Entry
Continuously Variable Transaxle II
Tip Start
AutoStick Automatic Transmission
Air Conditioning

Based on my reading here, for both fiscal and practical reasons, I have decided to run screaming from the sunroof.

Hi, all.

Well, it's done. There's a Riot in my driveway. It's blackberry... the one cited above. There'll be pics when I get some time and the weather abates a bit... not that you all have never seen a blackberry Riot before.

This was hard, though. I'll miss my X. The truck never gave me a reason to trade, but I think that you just start to worry about some things when the miles creep up, especially when you drive from Maryland to Missouri and back every Christmas to visit the wife's family. Eight times in nine years, that X, over hill and dale, without a hitch, once most of the way across Illinois on a highway closed due to snowfall... only no one told us, and the X didn't care. Hell, she didn't even notice. Dragged me and my bicycles all over the amateur USA Cycling road circuit, and to and from the track at Trexlertown, when I was racing, without a single complaint. To and from my wife's two cancer surgeries and chemo treatments, which she (my wife) put behind her with aplomb. Two damn tough gals, my wife and my X. Thank you, Xterra, for these things and more over the last nine years. You'll make someone else happy now, hopefully as happy as you made me. Miss you. Love you.

Riot... you have big shoes to fill, kid. Welcome. You'll have to earn it, but I plan on loving you, too.

Thanks to all here who helped me in my research... I do appreciate it.

When you think of all they allow us to do, they're not just cold steel, plastic, and rubber, are they?

Guys, here are just a few quickies... too cold out to really get any good shots in an appropriate setting. But they'll do for the time being...

Thank you, guys. :)

I still just can't get over how it looks like a little Commander. It has Jeep all over it.
