Got the tires

Well, I finally purchased the 225/70R17. I have not installed them yet. I took a few pictures.

I will take better pictures of the tires when I have them installed. I am happy so far with my choice in tires.

Next, maybe a lift. :D

Nicw tires, they look sharp, can't wait to see pics of them installed, my stock sra's are trashed now and i need something more agressive than them, yet not as crazy as my territories on my 16" these may just be the ticket!

I am quite angry. I went to Walmart today to have my tires installed. I just wanted it done quick and cheap. But… They refused to install my tires, because they were not stock size. The mechanic said the tire would rub at full lock when turned to the left. The supervisor said I would sue Walmart for the damages to my Jeep and tires.

The mechanic showed me where it would “rub” and said it would rip it all out. I looked at him and the area and said that is solid steel. He touched it and said oh, you are right. Well..... it would ruin your tire.

The funny thing is that I was told if I had the RRO lift installed on my Pat they would have been able to put that tire on. What..? Walmart will not install larger tires without a lift? Do you think that is crazy?

Later, the mechanic said I would put them on if my supervisor would have not said anything and told me not to turn to full lock. He said he had Compass and understood everything about Patriots as well... I told him that people have put the BF A/T on without major problems. He looked surprised.

Well, I either need to bring in my rims in only or go somewhere else. My wife as not happy either, but it was directed at me. :icon_rolleyes: I was able to explain my side and kinda of talked her into getting the RRO lift. :pepper:

So, the good news is I am most likely finally going to be able to get the RRO lift. :smiley_thumbs_up: Hopefully it all ends well.

Tires are on!

Well, I now have the tires installed on my Patriot. :pepper:

WARNING!!! These tires do rub at full lock!!! I believe they will still rub at full lock with a lift.

With all that aside, here are some pictures.

What do you all think? I like the way it looks. To me at least, it looks like it sits a little higher and looks meanier. :D

That's pretty awesome. I was wondering how that tire in that size would fit. Are you still planning to lift it? How bad is that rub at full lock? Looks good. Did you end up taking the wheels only to Wal-Mart?

To Answer Questions

It doesn't rub unless I go to full lock and it is not too bad. It doesn't really bother me, because I just quit turning that far. No problems.

A lift. Yea, I would like to lift my Pat. It was my plan for Christmas, but I don't think I will be able to. The stupid dryer quit working. So, it is still up in the air on that right now.

No, Wally World didn't install my tires. I went to a local tire shop who over charged to install 4 tires, but they could care less if they rub.

I am quite happy with them. They have worked great so far in the snow. A lot less road noise. The little "off-road" snow adventures I have done in roughly 4'' of snow never required me to lock in four wheel drive or low. I am hopefully getting 12"+ of snow so, I hope to finally get to challenge the Pat's new tires. Will keep you all posted.

Update:
I was getting around 25 mpg before the tire change and now I am guessing that the Pat is getting around 22 mpg, but not quote me on that yet. I need to gather more information.

Awesome choice on the tire, I personally like the look, economy, and additional clearance of a tire that is taller and narrower (As opposed to 235 or 245).

Good to know the rub isn't terrible and you can fit the tire with out a lift. I am wondering if the tires will rub the top of the wheel well when the springs are fully compressed.

It is a bummer you may be getting 3 mpg less. Since the odometer is off now, is it possible you are getting more miles per tank than you thought, or did you already compensate for that? I would think highway mileage would at least be about the same.

I dont think we are getting 12" of snow this time around but i cant wait to play with the Pat in the snow either. Here's hoping

I have had my springs slightly compressed and didn't have any rubbing, but I will keep watch.

The mpg guess of 22 was after factoring in the difference in speedo due to the new tires. My mpg is down like everyone else due to the temp and winter gas. Even with the new tires I am driving the same way. It could me more or less. I just need to run a few more tanks through to get a good number. My winter gas mpg last year was around 20-22 I believe. That is what I am shooting for. ... I do mostly highway miles, very little city.

Well, I think you boys in Clarksburg will not get that much, but in Philippi I will. Today, I already have twice to three times the amount of snow you do. I know this because I work in Bridgeport at the airport. Let it snow... Let it snow... :pepper:

OK an Update

Already after a few fill ups my average is 21 mpg. Now, for me that is not a bad number, because that is about what I was getting in the winter last year. So, for now I am happy, but it better go up when it warms up.

No problems with the tire so far, (expect the rubbing at full lock). Winter traction is fine and they slide less than the SRAs did. Have not need to lock in 4wd yet, but my wife did. Thinking about what to do next.... I think I will extend the warranty period. Waiting to go off road for when I have time so, I will let ya all know how that goes. Have a Great New Years! :pepper:

Did you ever go offroad? If so how were the tires? How was your mileage in the summer, with the larger diameter factored in? In other updates or thoughts on this tire in this size?

Yea, I'm awake

Yea, I am awake.

I am current getting around 20, but in the summer it was 21-22 depending on how I drove. I am driving more aggressively than I did when I was get 21 last year. I only lost 1 mpg. My wife makes my Patriot get around 18-19 mpg.

The tires are fine so far. I have worn off the inbd edge of all the tires. No more rubbing haha. They are still quiet and have a lot of tread. I am roughly guessing I have around 18k on them right now. I have no problems in the snow at all. I pulled a tree out off the road (2 lanes) with no problems too. The road was snow and ice covered. :D Pulled tree into a ditch on the side of the road. It did open both lanes. Two guys walked up to me while I was putting the tow rope around the tire and told me that my Jeep would not pull the tree. After I did they would like wow I didn't think your car would do that. You know haters gonna hate. :p Below is a bad picture of it.

I have had about no snow this year, but last year (2010-2011) I had no problems off-road in 6" snow. I never put in low or 4wd. I have taken the Pat into a ditch with no problems. The dig below; look at the compression at all four tires.

I have not done any serious off-roading still to date. I have not had the time and when I do I have no one to go with. I have up some rocks with no problems. Again, no lock or low. It was dark with no spotter and I scraped my underside, but other than that no problems. No pictures of that.

Hahaha... thanks for the update. I'm still torn on 225/70 17 or 225/65 17's. One one hand, I could get no rubbing and closer to stock size, and the other get more clearance and higher gearing...

I was trying to get an idea of how the 225/70-17's would look on a 2011 Patriot, so I added cladding for a comparison photo in this post. Here it is if you are interested, and I hope you don't mind me using it:

I put the SAT KL61's on with my Stu lift...235/65/17 - I get a little lock on the passenger side I believe at a full left lock.

I love the look of the tires on my Riot, especially with the lift!

Off-road but not really off-roading

All right today I went "off-road" but it was not really off-roading. It is a road to a gas well site. The video was shot with my cell phone. To get the video to work just click on the picture below.

1:22 A slight bottom out
1:50 Bottomed out again
2:50-2:58 In reverse and spinning tires
2:59-3:16 Locked 4x4 in reverse still spinning tires
3:17-3:20 Put into Drive, still locked and didn't know it at the time I have partial esp on.
3:23 Just decide to keep going forward. I could have backed up, but was just ticked off have spin-out. I have no problems when this was snow covered the other day.
3:45ish Stop and unlock 4X4
4:51ish Noticed Partial esp was on and turned it off

I only need 4wd when I was spinning in reverse. Other than that no problems. Hard to tell from video but I did slide a little. It was really muddy. It had just stopped raining.

Now, my front tires look like this now:

Pass Side (What it looks like when your lower ball joints/tie rods are bad and you don't currently have the money to fix them)

Driver Side

Rear Driver Side (Notice the insides are not missing)

Skid Plate (From when I bottomed out. Mud in the hole when the oil filter is. Oil filter, exhaust and the skid plate are fine.)
