Ive noticed that every time I turn my car on, once I hit near 10mph I hear a metal tick from the bottom of the car. It will not happen after the initial tick when exceeding 10mph. If I do not exceed 10mph I will not hear it until and I do, and once I do I will not hear it again until I turn the car off and restart the process.

I figured this was some sort of 4WD/ABS/ESP engagement going on under the car? I wanted to see if I should mention this to the dealer while its still under warranty or not.

Is this common?

It's a 2008 with 4wd.

I read something about that wierd noises in cold or the first start in the day bit not with patirots, i read about mitsu lancer gts ( same platform, cvt and 2.4 engine). They said is normal, because the cvt is cold lol.

I heard some little tick tick in cold, only few seconds. In the first start, I always wait 1.5 minutes to change from P to D and start moving.

Isn't that the automatic door locks?

Another similar post says its the brakes moving around after being idle for some.

Mine does it and also does the click click click click.... when its cold and the noise gets faster with faster acceleration.. any ideas?

It's only a single tick and it happens at 10mph every time and that is the only time its heard. It definitely sounds like its coming from the drivetrain. I swear it sounds like something is engaging once the car reaches a speed. It's definitely not the engine, I know what that sounds like when its cold, valves are loud which is pretty normal.

Thats a typical cold start for an engine, the lifters tapping against the cam and valves can be louder untill the engine warms up. If it's excessivly loud that can mean their is some slack in the valvetrain in which you should have looked at, but it should be fine. If you put thicker oil in like 10w40 it should quite it down.

It is most likely the Initial startup test of the Antilock brake system that the computer performs every time the vehicle is first started and then driven forward. All newer vehicles with ABS do this, Chryslers just seem to be very noticable. My 1999 Plymouth voyager with ABS did this at about 10-15 MPH, My wifes 2008 Jeep Liberty does this at 10 - 15 MPH. The General Motors vehicles that I have had arent as noisy but sometimes I could feel a pulsation in the brake pedal at 10-15 MPH after first startup and I was applying the brake pedal pulling out of a parking space. So you probably dont need to worry about it.

My old malibu never made noises like this on a cold start. Maybe because it was a v6? and 4cyls are just a bit noisier?
