The big catch is that the Warranty is only valid with the original owner of the car.

I believe Chrysler is counting on one of the following to happen:

1) You sell the car or trade it in before any PT parts go bad.

2) Accident or totalled vehicle would probably void the warranty since you would get another / new vehicle.

3) The non-power train parts will become costly to maintain after a hundred thousand miles (steering parts/box, suspension, sensors, leaks, fuel system, electrical, brake system). So they figure you may junk it before any PT parts go bad.

service?

What's the catch?
I believe the warranty requires regular maintenence and upkeep,
to keep records clean beleive most people will be using dealership service
and over life of the vehicle can probably cover cost of a new engine through what is spent in routine service
also the new world engine is shared and cost is much lower than previous engines

To keep the lifetime powertrain warranty, you must:

1) Be the first registered owner of the vehicle
2) Bring the vehicle to a Chrysler, Dodge, or Jeep dealership every five (5) years for a no-charge vehicle inspection
3) You are encouraged, but not required to keep service records. You can change your own oil; they will be able to tell if you never changed your engine oil

This is what I got from the financial accountant when I purchased the warranty from the dealership.

Also, hunter44102 and Terasec have valid points.

Having to make good on warranty service will probably be the exception, not the rule. Most people will belive that they must have their vehicle serviced at the dealership to keep their warranty.

I expect to keep this Jeep up to 300K miles; there's no reason the other (non-covered) components can't last that long. I always keep my vehicles maintained and in good working order.

Does anybody know if the Lifetime P.T. Warrenty applies to Canadian models?

It does not apply to Canadian warrenty. It is only in the states, Virgin Islands and one more country I think but not us Canucks. I'm not sure why tho.

Maybe because in Canada we drive our SUV's and 4x4's more "aggressively" and end up breaking more parts when its cold. Who knows though...

The finance lady at my dealer told me more or less the same thing, although I think she mentioned the inspection is 5 years or 100,000 mi, if I remember correctly.

Since, I bought my Pat, not too long before the Lifetime Warranty started, I got a flyer from my dealer offering the Lifetime Warranty for 1/2 price at $900 if you purchased the warranty before Sept. 30. After that, it would cost you $1800.
Unfortunately, Chrysler was not offering a way to roll the cost of the warranty into your loan, nor was there a way to pay it in monthly installments, so I'm debating whether or not to got for it. Its a decent chunk of change, although the extra peace of mind, might be worth it.
