I have a Black Patriot and washing it every week now (I have had it about 3 weeks) and have found that I need some better equipment to wash my car.

What works well to rub the soap into the car? Sponges of some sort?

What wax do ya'll prefer. I remember seeing some product on here that was not Meguir's (sp) that several liked.

I am using the Mr. Clean washing system. Where you hook up to your water hose and it's supposed to leave the car spotless on the last cycle due to a "filter" that is in the handle system. It spots too much.

I will not take my car to any carwash that has the cloth brushes inside the wash.

Coach, I have used the Mr. Clean washing system for over 2 years now (on our Mini Cooper) and it worked flawlessly. Not ONE spot was ever left behind. I wonder if your filter is working properly?
And..(how to say this tactfully..) you have to follow the directions to a "T". One skip of steps and it will turn out bad. The hardest thing for me to rememeber was to keep the whole car wet just before rinsing with the filter setting. If not, spots will have already set in and they cant be removed by that filtered spray. Also, I always replaced that filter after about 6 uses. Any more than that, gave me less than satisfactory results. Another taboo thing was to use someone elses soap in the Mr Clean gun.
You might want to try another filter and give it one more chance. If, while in the spotless setting, you don't get the water beads gliding over your cars surface, it's not gonna work well.
Best of luck,
Randy

better drying?

washing may not be the problem
might be drying,
have been washing my car about once a week
all i use is any auto soap,
and liquid wax that is applied as you dry,
not a single spot,
can still see individual particles of dust as they settle,

while the liquid wax doesnt last as long, if its part of your drying works fine,

Hey Coach,

I've found for my black Patriot, drying is the most important step to get rid of spots. For me, EVERY inch has to be hit with a drying towel and all water has to be removed or it will spot.

I use guzzler towels and never drag or move them. Lay on the car,pat towel to absorb, pick up, move, lay, pat etc....

Autogeek is a fantastic site for car washing products. Everything they sell is top end high quality stuff. They also have several videos and tutorials on washing and waxing.

I have been using mostly Mother's products for the last few years. nice stuff but not too hard on the wallet. But I have also used Pinnacle and Meguiars, both are really nice stuff but a little more $$.

Good choice. I've got gouges all along the driver's side of my new pat from one of those damn carwashes. Either the paint is really soft, or those little spinning things picked up a rock or something...

Little squiggly scratches running from the drivers door down the side to the bumper.

Never again.

I avoid using any ammonia based window cleaner on the car. The ammonia is bad for the interior.
Also, never use amonia based window cleaner on tint, unless you like that funky light purple look.

Anyone have any tips on how to remove wax that accidentally gets on the flat black trim? Mud flaps, rockers, rear view mirrors, window molding, roof rack, lift gate handle. My lift gate handle is flat black, rough finish, not smooth color coded like some.

The best way to dry your vehicle if you don't have the mr clean system is use a leaf blower. I tried it once and it works great. Dries everything even in hard to get to areas. I read its bad to use towels to dry it can pickup dirt that may have been missed or hard to remove when washing and leave swirl marks. I use the mr clean system and it works great for me. Just remember to change the filter regularly. As for wax I use nu finish the once a year car polish. I hate to wax.

I'm using Armor All Car Wash Concentrate - 10 ml in a bucket, and apply it with a sponge. I use a garden hose with nozzle - no special attachments. I then use a synthetic chamois to dry, and I don't get water spots. Could the water spots be a result of the hardness of the municipal water being used? Tonight I waxed my Patriot for the first time since it was new in June '07. I used Turtle Wax Ice, and it works beautifully. The really nice thing - no white residue on rubber window seals or door handles! I recommend it.
