Did the plugs this weekend, I have 31000 miles on the stock plugs, they were out of spec, but not too bad. I also cleaned/oiled the K&N filter and reset the battery.

Stuttering issue seems to have gotten a little better, but its definitely still there. Sounds like this is just part of the drive by wire system and its normal I guess...

When are we gonna get the diesel over here? :)

My 2010 Compass with 600 miles on it does the same thing. If I upshift just below 3000 rpm from 1-2 or 2-3 I get the bucking. If I stretch it to 3500-4000 rpm between shifts it is much smoother. I would say it is more of a fueling issue than anything else. My 2006 fuel injected Suzuki V-Strom 650 (650 V-Twin) would do the same thing and it was diagnosed as a lean surge. It was uncomfortable to ride below 3500 rpm. I took it to the dealer and we adjusted the fuel map with a Yoshimura tuning box and it is buttery smooth from idle to redline.

Sidenote, if I am very light on the throttle, say in a 40mph zone, and am just puttering along it is smooth when I go through the gears. I can induce the bucking by stepping on the throttle hard right after I shift. If I start off easy on the throttle and then gradually mash it down it will pull smoothly from 1500rpm on up. This being in the Compass if it wasn't clear.

For what it's worth it is the 2.4L 4x4 Compass.

Its got to be something weird with the drive by wire system... I also notice that when I go over a speed bump with my foot lightly on the gas it shutters as well after going past the speed bump, its almost like theres a motion sensor that detects abnormal vehicle movement and starts to alter the throttle settings.. Part of the ESP probably has some sort of motion sensor?

Have there been any TSB's recently to address this?

Mine is still doing it but not as bad in the winter with cooler temps. I took it to the dealer a few months back and of course they said they could not duplicate the problem.
I was going to trade mine in on a Commander but Jeep discontinued making them. I'm hoping to trade for a new Grand Cherokee next year. Give them time to work out the bugs of a new model.

until then ill have to put up with the jerks. lol

2008 4wd 5 speed Patriot Bucking..84,000 miles

Bucking happens intermittently when I accelerate...usually in 4th gear, around 3100-3600 rpm, but it happens in ALL gears..not when cruising..just accelerating. No codes generated.
Went to dealer and he confirmed problem. He
1) Changed plugs..he said they were fouled and with 80,000+ miles I figured ok
2) Did the drip cleaning of my injectors (includeds throttle body)
3) Reflashed computer with newest sw..including the ESP light won't go out update

He took it for a ride, and it still bucked. I'm now out $220 and still have the problem.

So, he tells me to drive the car for a while, and see if the injector cleaner working its way through the engine has any benefit.

Drove the car hard. Slight bucking. Turned it off and let it sit for a few hours, restarted it and drove....no bucking...turned it off again (remember this was an intermittent problem)..and let it sit...started again...no problem...stopped and started the Pat about 6 times since it left the dealership..I shifted in the band where most of the problems occurred and still no problem...not to say it won't happen again, but interesting that I at least got some benefit...who know what it was? I doubt the plugs, cause the car would have been fine as soon as they were replaced, but still exhibited the buck...the injector cleaning? while it still bucked, maybe he was right about the solution working its way through the fuel system (stuck throttle????)...anyway, so far so good...will keep you posted.

Still Bucks

The Pat seemed to be cured of its bucking, but it is back, about 500 miles after the new plugs and injectors were cleaned. I'm calling Chrysler and filing a complaint. The dealer confirms there's a problem, but can't fix it!

BUCKING CURED!

Since no computer codes were being generated, dealer had mechanic hook up scanner to computer while he was driving the Pat. Sure enough codes were being generated showing the throttle unit was thinking that his foot was being taken off the pedal.

They replaced the throttle unit and the Pat runs like a top.

Hope this helps someone else.

my patriot will be three months old tomorrow, I have also noticed this slight shutter, I figure this to be something to do with the variable transmission, It seems this problem only occurs when you are at a transition point for shifting and slightly change the pressure on the pedal, it just acts as if it doesn't know what gear to use.

So the throttle position sensor was replaced? Or are we talking about the throttle body?

mine has been doing it since day one as well 30k miles later and I have gotten used to it and learned to drive with it. seems like if you shift early and the under torqued 4 banger can't handle the acceleration it bucks and shutters. ease off the gass all the way and re apply throttle it goes away. under heavy/full acceleration no problems. I just learned not to shift below 3k RPM's if I needed to stretch the engine and get up speed quickly. if Im puttering around in the city and shift below 3k and go easy on the throttle it doesnt shutter.
Mine, too - and what shikkapow says it basically what I've done to live with it, too. I don't even really notice it anymore -- it's almost instinctive to get around it or manage it if it happens.

I've never really classified it as a 'issue' more so as just how this particular transmission performs. BUT...since the OP's symptoms seem to be getting worse, this is a bit of a cause for alarm! :wow:

Hope we can confirm from more people that the throttle unit needs replacing to cure this!

My 09 did this alot. I had a CVT, so I would just drive with the autostick if I was around town. 35 mph or less. My 2011 is an FDII, so no autostick. The lower gearing seems to eliminate most of it, but another trick is to "blip" the throttle. I think this unlocks the torque converter and allows the trans to freewheel. If I remember right, this doesnt work with the FDI, for some reason.

This is exactly the problem I do have. Anybody else with this problem which cured by a new throttle position sensor?
I do have a second appointment next thursday so will definitely bring up this solution.
