How does the class 3 Hidden Hitch compare to the Curt. Sounds easier to install, but not as strong.
Easier to install (by 2 bolts), and not as strong, though the strength is more than the Patriot is able to handle anyway (unless you are pushing a high tongue weight).

That being said, a few of us have chosen the Curt for the simple reasons that we could get them cheap (I think I paid $130 and it came with the drop/raise bar? was cheaper than HH/Reese for me), they are a little sturdier (even if you don't need it, it is peace of mind), and just in case we load the tongue a little heavy (such as with a cargo carrier).

For those in Canada I bought this hitch new off ebay on Saturday with free Fedex shipping and received it on Wednesday. No duties since it get's shipped from a warehouse in Ontario  I bought the curt wiring harness as well and will be attempting the install this weekend if the weather plays ball

Cost was:

hitch $132US
t-connector $67US

Now I am just looking for a deal on the oil cooler

Esteves858 which wiring harness did you use?
I sent you a PM about the ebay contact for this... can you let me know the store or ebay name associated with your purchase? I can't find it......
I need to get something and install it before July when we drive from Ontario to BC.... we want to take our bikes :p

thanx

OMG!

I ordered one of these through ebay thanx to cobretty...
I arrived home last night to find the box on my porch, left there by FedEx... no signature required?!?!?!
And, to top it off, the hitch was protruding through the box in two places!

There was a big sign on the side of it stating that if there is any damage to call the CURT 1888 number right away... which i did.
I'm pretty sure the hitch itself is fine... the black paint has chipped off a tiny bit, but i don't think that will be an issue..... won't be able to istall it for a few weeks as i need to find a friend to help.... i haven't got the tools....

I'll let you all know how it turns out.

Why drill out holes when you can buy other hitches that don't require any drilling or cutting ? What the H do you think your going to pull with the Patriot? You think you're going to pull something so heavy that you're going to rip the hitch off? It's not a big Tow Truck where you might have to Tow a big Semi. Just put a hitch on it, simple as that. U-Haul makes one that bolts right on, easy or maybe keep hashing it out on what hitch to buy because you need one that is so strong, that you won't have to worry about ripping the back end of your Patriot apart. Keep hashing in out over a receiver hitch. The end !!!

Umm... has been stated MANY times before, many of us bought the STRONGER hitch because it was also CHEAPER.

Why "the H" would you spend more money for a weaker hitch when you can get a stronger one for cheaper? Sure we won't be able to tow more because we will be limited to the towing capacity of the Patriot, but for those of us with hitch mounted cargo carriers, the extra tongue weight DOES help.

I have a cargo carrier that slides into the receiver hitch, don't think I can load it down to the point the hitch is going to bend. If I loaded that much on it, the rear tires would be stuffed up in the wheel wells scraping. When you get done drilling out the holes and bolting the hitch on you probably should weld it to the frame too, that way there you won't have to ever worry about it. Ya think ? Thats something else that you can hash out, welding it to the frame.

Eh, loading my brother's moped and a cooler or two on my cargo carrier makes me happy that my hitch is rated at 400lb tongue weight instead of the 350lb.... My cargo carrier is rated at 500lbs by the way.

Either way I am happy with my choice to get cheaper and stronger, and that is all that matters to me. Hopefully you are happy with your choice as well, but that doesn't mean that you need to go crazy trying to get people to follow the same route that you did so that you can feel better about your purchase....

My cargo carrier is rated at 700lbs, do you have a roof rack too? You have a load on the rack, so you need that strong hitch. I didn't know you hauled that much on your rack, good thinking with the Curt hitch.

Earthworm, what are you talking about?

I wanted to be able to carry heavy objects that didn't fit inside my vehicle. I looked at hitches. The Curt hitch was rated at a higher tongue weight (which equals greater allowed loading) and was cheaper and included the drop bar. It fit my needs best, so I bought it. Other people were happy enough with the lower tongue weight, and didn't want to be bothered with enlarging 2 holes, so they bought the other hitch. Nothing wrong with that either.

Max tounge weight.

Regardless of whether the hitch is rated for 350lbs or 400lbs, both are substantially more than the max set by Jeep.

Page 307 of my owner's manual shows the Max Tongue Wt as 225lbs with the Trailer Prep Package, otherwise it's only 150lbs.

Like I said I didn't know you carried all that on your rack, now I see why you went with the strongest hitch for the money, didn't know you carried a Moped on the rack. Do you have a Roof Rack too?

Like Butch, I bought the Curt hitch for value, good quality and great price. $124.95 w/shipping and a ball mount included in the price.
But, I only did a 4 bolt installation for ease, so I ended up with "standard" hitch strength and paid much less than I would have for any other hitch and ball mount at the time.
If I want, I can install the other 2 bolts if my needs change.
It was the best option for a hitch at the time PERIOD. The higher tongue weight rating was just the icing on cake for me.

My Patriot is not an offroader, but for those who are and use their receiver as a recovery point, I sure as heck think they'd rather have a hitch attached with 6 bolts instead of 4 to distribute the strain over a wider area of the "frame".

Installed the hitch over the weekend. Took off the bumper cover to do the install and found it super easy after the cover was off. I can't imagine trying to put it on with the bumper cover in place.

One Question though.... we didn't have a working torque wrench, and so we just tightened them as much as we could.
What happenes if the bolts are tightened too much?
