Got my new registration today and the documentation shows the List Price as $18991 (for license taxing purposes) so I called the MVD because this was more than the MSRP and I wanted to know why. They stated that the List Price from the Manufacturers Statement Of Origin (MSO) should have been $19545 (for license taxing purposes). They didn't change anything for me (up or down) but what MSO price are others being license taxed at?

That's going to vary by state and nation.

Here in Missouri, the taxable amount for sales tax is the agreed upon price minus any rebates, trade ins, or insurance amounts (if it is replacing a vehicle totaled by insurance, the amount paid by insurance is treated as a trade-in). Any amount owed on the trade (or totaled vehicle) is not considered; for example, you could trade in a vehicle worth $15,000 but with a $13,000 lien on it for a Patriot priced at $20,000, and you'll be paying sales tax on $5000.

Your state (or nation, if not in the US) may well have different rules, so the taxes we paid on our Patriots may mean absolutely nothing to your situation.

I'm not referring to sales taxes, I'm referring to annual license taxes, or lieu taxes for plates. I'm assuming most states base this on the value of the vehicle which depreciates every year down to a minimum amount. Even if your state doesn't tax based on value of vehicle every year, I would imagine the "Manufacturers List Price" would be listed somewhere on the title? I'm looking for what others have listed for the same vehicle, 2010 Sport 4x4?

Here in Ohio our plates cost the same for any car or truck but are different depending on type of car. Passenger cars are one rate while SUVs and Trucks over a certain capacity (i.e. 3/4 ton truck is higher) and commercial vehicles and such are another rate. Then there is a tax on top of that but it depends on which city/town you live in. Mine is $10 flat tax, one town over is only $5 so it really depends on where you live I guess....

Since your sig reveals you have same vehicle I'm asking about, does your title or documentation show the "List Price" anywhere? That's kinda what I'm asking. Guess the tax issue confused the question.

I think ours in PA is the same as Johnnyboy in Ohio. We pay a sales tax when we purchase, but no annual taxes based on vehicle value. I know in Virginia I had to pay a tax on a vehicle each year, luxury tax or something like that, but not here in PA. Although they did try to add a tax like that once but no one paid it, so it went away.

I do have to pay an annual registration fee, and that as said above is based on the type of vehicle, not the value.

Personal property tax in NC

Our tags are not value driven but there is an annual personal property tax on the vehicle.

MINI, I don't have my title yet but I know with my old car when I signed off on that title to the dealership I noticed it did have a sale price on it. So, yes there is a sale price on the title but it doesn't affect the tax for registration. Like dixiedog said we pay sales tax when we first purchase the car.

So for example, my Pat was:

$22,500 (not exact, too lazy to get my papers:zzz:)
-2,500 trade in (trade allowance not taxed in Ohio)
=20,000 tax base
6.5% tax =$1,300

So 20,000 + 1,300 tax - 1,500 rebate = $19,800 owed to dealer

Then when I get my title I will have to go get plates which is $34.5 + $10 tax "fee" based on my city.

Hey dixiedog, where are you in PA? I live right by the PA line so I see a lot of PA plates around here.

Just renewed my Patriot Registration in good ol California. It was $259.00 for 2007 Jeep Patriot for one year.
So, earthworm, how much of that was based on the value of the vehicle?
I just paid $319.05 License Tax (based on List Price) on a 2010 Sport + $8.25 Registration Fee + $1.50 Air Quality Fee + $4.00 Title Fee (one time fee)
Guess you now see why I was concerned about the Manufacturers List Price?
All of these fees are just for 1 year, but the License Tax goes down 16% each year as the vehicle depreciates.

I don't know, but is used to go down every year. Arnold lowered it when he became Govenator, and now they have raised it back up because of the Economic conditions of the State of California, which is happening to all of the USA.

Ah, OK, I get it.

Missouri doesn't base yearly registration/licensing fees on the value of the vehicle. We pay yearly personal property tax that is based on the value of the car, but registration depends on the horsepower and weight classes of the vehicle. It really isn't much; I just renewed my Limited 4x4 a few months back (2 year registration) for $49.50.

The property tax will vary based on county/city and assorted other rates. I don't remember how much the Jeep was this past year, but I think it was somewhere in the $300-400 range.

OUCH!!!!!!! Guess I won't complain when I go in next month to renew my plates. It's a piddle :D$72/year:pepper: in Ontario, unless you live in Toronto and then it's an extra $60 (which I don't).
