breaks question

Hi

I have my 2010 patriot since almost 3 weeks now. I noticed that if I keep it sitting for a while or for a whole night, and then I drive it, the first 2 or 3"smooth" braking events give the feeling that the brakes (pads) slightly bite the wheels in a sharp and fast way (half a second) creating a slight hesitation and then the gradual braking resumes under the same foot pressure.

This does not happen after 2 or 3 braking events in the beginning of a trip.

Any similar behavior out there?

FYI...it's 'braking' and 'brakes', not 'breaking' and 'breaks'. :)

brake, break...two words that are pronounced the same but have two entirely different meanings. :smiley_thumbs_up:

does that make cents? :p

Yeah, these rotors seem to rust up quicker than others... has it been raining a lot, 'cause that can do it.

More likely though, your brakes are just new. Give it another week for the pads to 'seat' and they should behave like normal.

ABS should only kick in with hard braking, ABS is to prevent skidding, and you'll feel the brakes release, even though you have hard pressure on the pedal.

Your situation does not sound like anything caused by the ABS.

Not a personal attack here navy, I'm just using your post as an example. For the most part, I enjoy reading what you post.

Now, if people here are going to post comments, correcting someone elses spelling, thats fine. Just as long as you also post something that relates to the thread. Otherwise, you look like your just going around playing the spelling officer, and no one likes that guy... :smiley_thumbs_up:

Lets be proactive and help the OP with his question, and not just his spelling.

My rear Brakes tend to rust overnight. The next morning, they feel as if they are going to lock up when I back out of the driveway. After about a mile, everything is fine.

Thats cheap metal for you.

No problem for the spelling correction, my fault, it is indeed brakes :)

After another week spent focusing on what could be the cause of this issue, I thought it could be the automatic CVT transmission?!

In fact a similar feel happens if I am rolling not that fast and remove my foot from the accelerator, it seems it tends to shift down gear in a sort of abrupt/stuttering way.

So I presume if I am rolling on a low speed and I break smoothly, the decceleration results in a shift down at a specific point that causes this feel.

But now why this happens in the first 2 or 3 breaks after I start driving it vs the CVT shift down ummm

good point and I appologize. but I'm not really here to win any popularity contests and I suppose that's a good thing then, right? :icon_rolleyes:

so....back on topic:

the only issues I had with my Compass regarding brakes would be that first thing in the AM the rears would squeak as I backed out of the garage. after that, they were fine. for 5 seconds every morning, it was just annoying. not enough for me to be taking into work to have them check it out.

APOLOGISE------navy48----There is no double P in the word !!---If you wish to APPOLOgise your Patriot, you would br turning it into a space shuttle....lol.

I Apologise for picking you up on this!! However I believe that the spacecraft has 2 L's thus being Appollo -----Right pay attention class & write me in 1000 words --I must not..........


Or Apollo....even !!!

Mine used to do the same thing. My Patriot is a 2010 and the brakes would squeak and lock up a bit when backing out of the driveway. The squeaking and locking has stopped after a few months but who knows if it will return in the winter. I think that "downshifting" feeling you are experiencing is the brake assist. I could be wrong here but I believe it is designed to reduce wear on the brakes. I wish I could turn it off because it always seems to engage right before I want to start braking so there is always a double downshift feeling for me.

Oh come on....just blame it on spell-check! I wrote an article for the paper yesterday, the lady's name was "Kristi" and spell check came up with Christie, and as I was in a hurry, didn't notice this until I read this AM's paper. Embarassing, to say the least!

Michael, I think I know what you mean about the CVT. When I first test drove the Patiot, I started down the road very slowly then accelerated going at a slow speed (less than 35 mph). When I accelerated, it felt like the jeep hesitated then surged. Felt like the gas pedal was shaking a bit under my foot. I asked the salesman why it did that and he said he didn't know what I meant. This is the same guy that also DID NOT explain the Freedom Drive. I learned about the Freedom Drive and how the CVT operates on this site.
