If you want to test if there is something wrong with your fuel consumption try this. Fill the tank. Drive at least half of the tank without ever letting the engine rev over 2000 rpm. If you are not up near 28 to 30 MPG highway or 24 city, there is something wrong with the way the engine uses gas. If you get the mileage I say doing that, then it is your driving style that uses lots of fuel and you can decide if you like to save fuel or not by changing how you drive.

My 5 speed will easily average 30 when I drive 90% highway and keep the RPMs low. Which means slow acceleration and easy pressure on the accelerator.

I have another post going regarding how I overfilled my tank with 57L. I had 421 km on this tank and had I stopped when the pump shut off @ 46L, I'd be looking at 10.9L /100km or roughly 21.6 mpg -all city. The overfill has skewed the numbers on this fill-up,hence the 18 mpg rating, but it will make it up on the next. Example: After fill-up my EVIC was showing 486 km until empty and it hasn't changed even after driving 20 km. The fact I overfilled by 11 L means I'll have roughly 100 km before the gas needle starts to move. That should result in a 500 to 550 km tank @ 46L or 25 to 28 mpg. I'll post the results in the "Fuel Tank Capacity" post-stay tuned.:D

I stop as soon as the pump clicks off the first time. I tried filling it all the way once, smelled gas inside for a day. I dont do that anymore... 25 mpg 70% hwy (Hills)

I too learned the "Do not top off" lesson.. I thought I had a leak but it was from overfilling.

I got the diesel clatter in the cold and on first startup. I bought an 09 though with lifetime powertrain. If it blows, I'll be in the dealer's lounge drinking coffee while they pay to fix it.

Our 5 speed is decent, no grinding problems. But I will say the ratios suck. I also have to get used to shifting at higher RPM's because this motor makes no power whatsoever. But I'm getting paid back in great MPG and that's the tradeoff I guess.

I will always likely buy American...but the build quality in this Jeep isn't what I hoped it would be.

I've got 750km/465 mi and I'm really getting annoyed with the 1-2 & 2-3 gear crunch. If I really slow down the shifts the syncros will mesh . I can also eliminate the 1-2 crunch if I press the shifter against the left side wall in the direction of the drivers door as I make the transition. What this tells me is that the gears are not machined to a high tolerance and any variation in these specs will cause them to clash. I went through this same crap with my Eagle Talon and I'm not about to go through this again. Twenty years later and North American automakers still cannot build a manual tranny to save their lives. Dealer tells me it will get better just let it break in. I'm sorry but the last time I checked buying a new vehicle should be a pleasurable driving experience and not having to worry about whether the next shift will be smooth or not.

Anyone know if the shifting will in fact get better, or do I have to start looking at Redline gear products again??? Damn frustrating !!!

I have not had a gear crunch problem in the forward gears, but I do sometimes have a devil of a time getting it into reverse. Occasionally I have crunched the forward gears, but was a bit tired when I did it. I think maybe the placement of the shifter has something to do with it in my case. It's at an odd angle--well, it's at _an_ angle, like an automatic car's PRNDLL, which seems weird to me, but it accommodates the man-tran and the automatic having the same shifter and shifter placement, probably saving money on the build.

All my other manuals have been pretty much perpendicular to the ground. the angled, high placed shifter took getting used to. More wrist action involved, and less upper arm.

Here is an update for all 2010 owners out there with the 5 sp manual tranny, especially if you factory ordered it. If you're experiencing gear notchiness/clash between 1-2 &/or 2-3 you'll be glad to know that it does smoothen out somewhat as you pile up the mileage. I'm sitting at roughly 1400 miles on the OD and I'm definately noticing smoother shifting. OMG could the dealer have been right:wow:

NEVER!! Top off your tank with gas!! It has a Carbon Canister fitted in the system to collect & dispell gas fumes & gasses. If you flood this filter too many times with liquid gas It will start throwing codes & causing you all kinds of problems!!

I also still frequent Caliber & Avenger Forums & this kind of info crops up now & again!!

60 000 and engine runs like a swiss watch

I can't say anything bad about my Patriot with the exception of ball joints which I had to change last month and yes the gearing could be smoother specially when A/C is running, overall I'm satisfied but my next vehicle may be Subaru Forester

my pat makes the rattle first thing in the morning if its not warmed up before I drive it. after about 30 secs it goes away..
