Hi my wife has had her CRD for about 1 month now it,s an 08 model and has 22000 miles on the clock. I very rarely drive her car but when i drove it this week i noticed a noise from the turbo when changing up gears at about 2500-3000 revs which can only be described as a loud noise that sounds like an owl , it is so loud i can hear it clearly as she drives away down our road.
I don,t recall this noise when we test drove the car, maybe because it was only being driven carefully below 2500 revs.
So the question i am asking is ,is this a normal noise for these VW TDI engines or should i get it checked out at the dealer.

My CRD has a Diesel rumble--& thats it!! I dont hear any other noise. Check your Turbo pipes , I believe they are only secured by pastic straps. However if the pipes are loose you would probably get a misfire & loss of power.

Thanks Tiptronic I have researched on various TDI websites with conflicting info some say this is normal others say get your turbo checked asap. Will get under car this week to check for loose/split turbo hoses and if all hoses are o.k i will get dealer inspect turbo condition.
Last week the Pat randomly lost power and would not rev out , have since changed the fuel filter and has been o.k , but thinking the power loss may be related to the turbo failing.

Yea I had an annoying misfire for a few weeks but a fuel filter change cured it. The tech told me they had also done small fuel line mod. However in my hurry to pay & get my Jeep back I forgot to ask exactly what the mod was.

I know what you mean. I sometimes hear a whooshing sound when I change gear, could be the turbo. I had a creaking coming from the front dash somewhere. It started a couple of days ago and was driving me crazy. Found it today it was the sunshade. I just pushed it upwards and it creaked and now it's fine. On the turbo I've not had any misfires or loss of power and I still get the owl type sound. Just past the 6000 mile mark.

Diagnosed what the turbo noise was today it,s knackered . Lost all power today max 30mph with foot to floor black smoke the lot , limped to dealer and they confirmed its failed.
Why in the name of God has the turbo failed with 22000 miles on the clock and dealer service history. This for me , brings into question the reliability of the VW engine ,it,s all covered by warranty but its still a pain in the a**. Any more reliability issues and the Pats history.

Cany quite understand that?? These units are usually pretty bulletproof!!

Good point but we have the 2 litre CRD engine ( Common rail direct injection) The TDI engine was 1.9 ( Turbocharged diesel Intercooled)

I had the TDI on my Skoda Superb-No probs , Fast ,Smooth & economical. the TDI was a pumpe' duce' engine with the injector pump built into the cylinder head.

Hi Tiptronic. Now intend to change oil every 6K since this turbo failure and will be using Mobil 1 ESP formula 5/30 fully synthetic and use a Mopar filter , do you change your own oil and would you recommend this Mobil 1 oil for our CRD engines?
Asdas selling Mobil 1 for ÂŁ32 for 5L , Halfords ÂŁ46 for same oil.

I must admit I havnt yet done my own oil change , so far its been done by the dealer every 9.000 miles (As per the Jeep service schedule) My service invoice states that my dealer used Mobil 1 synthetic , but doesnt state the grade. after my warranty is up i'll probably stretch mine OUT to every 12,000 miles . Some Audis , Skodas & VW's are scheduled changes every 20.000 miles .I think its probably a turbo fault you have rather than an oil quality fault . It wont hurt to change your oil sooner than recommended, but as you know , in this country its rather an expensive option.

Got the Pat back from dealer after fitting new turbo , lucky it,s under warranty cost ÂŁ1400. I changed the oil straight away and will now be changing oil every 6K.
Noticed when changing oil that the engine cover is wearing through the coolant expansion bottle return hose so installed piece of black conduit tubing over the hose to protect it.
Maybe worth checking if you are a CRD owner.

Oil starvation is the number 1 killer on Turbos. I had a turbo go on a brand new Discovery TD5, due to a kinked oil return pipe, causing insufficient oil flow through the turbo. Maybe yours was the same, who knows.

It was fine for the first 6k miles, probably as was only used for local town runs because the first time I went on a motoryway journey it blew - smoke everywhere and no power.

Cheers

forgot to say, it may be worth noting the info in the manual around letting the turbo spool down and cool after a fast run etc and not 'blipping' the accelerator before switching off the engine etc, all good turbo etiquette !

Cheers

hrm, i'm not familar with the CRD's, but the turbo's at work make a crazy elephant sound when they get all messed up.

We have had the problem of sudden loss of power due to the turbo just stop working...... can be a bit annoying when towing a trailer with a Westfield on it and your going up a hill and then you realise you have no power and you try and stop and start the engine while on the move to fix the problem!!

Anyway, this is now the 2nd time this has happened now, the 1st time was back in January, then the PAT when back to Jeep and they said that this was a software problem, they did the latest software upgrade and it had been fine ever since, but last weekend the same fault happened again......
Jeep managed to take a look on Friday Afternoon and they have said they have managed to get 2 error messages of the ECU but they don't know what they mean. So on Monday they are going to send they off to Jeep HQ and find out what the mean. Fingers Crossed they can give me a straight answer to the problem.

Warranty runs out in July...... we are going to get a 40k sevice done before the warranty runs out

Forgot to say, our turbo has made that woooshh every since we've had the car, which is about a year now, I think it sound ace!!!

It says in the manual that you should let your diesel idle for up to 5 minutes before switching off the engine to let the turbo cool down. I am wondering how you would prove that you had done this to Jeep if you had a turbo warranty claim. Does an error message get recorded if you just switch it off like a normal engine?
