So roughly 4 months into the ownership of my Patriot, I have discovered spot rust on my doors. I always park in my garage when I am not working. I try to keep road salt off but am not obsessive about car washes in the winter. Is this normal after 4 months of ownership? This is pissing me off a bit. Otherwise love this vehicle.

Are you talking at the bottom or any seam of the door or just random speckles in the middle of the door?

If it's in the middle and seemingly random it's possible it's rail dust from transport and a clay bar will clean it up.

Random speckles on doors and tailgate. Not too many and polished the Patriot today and got rid of most if not all the spots. Will have to wait and see if they return. Also finally took the ugly dealership logo off the tailgate which looks much better. Next up is the black muffler mod.

sometime those rust speckles comes from the front brake pads wear,it's a very fine dust that stick to the paint,i use a fine buffing compound to get them off, i had the same problem with a 2002 chrysler and 7 years later there was no rust on the doors when i sold the car.

Seen what your talking about on another car

Hey, My wife had a white Chrysler Pacifica and I thought it had rust specks too until I also noticed they were on the plastic fascias also. Used mild paint cleaner polish and they went away. My other two Jeeps are dark colors so I never noticed anything.

Yes. Forgot to mention that they were also on the plastic. Thought that was sorta weird.

I would certainly recommend that you look at getting some good glay bar and use it once we are past the worst of the winter/spring weather when you go to clean your vehicle. I used the Meguiars product and loved it;

The best thing was, it smelled like bubblegum from the 1980's. You can dilute it with water to make it go further. It's very simple to use, just make sure that the car surface is well lubricated when you use it.

I wonder if WD40 would remove it? I use that to remove tar and bugs.

Muffler is easy, easier if you back onto some ramps. I masked off everything around it, under the bumper, all around the pipe, etc. I sprayed the pipe too.

I had a 2003 Chevy Silverado in White which got the speckles of rust all over. Now I have a White Patriot and same thing. Last summer I went over the entire vehicle with a clay bar and are gone. This winter I have a few show up but not near as much as before.

There was a Meguiars product I used in the past that resembled a wax worked good on my White Cherokee which had some spot rust but it was 11 years old. I just don't see how a vehicle should get rust after 4 months of ownership. I thank everyone for their replies but I know how to get rid of it (temporarily) anyway. I just thought it was odd. If it does return, I will try the clay bar.

I use a clay bar in the spring and once in the fall ( if needed ). This is my 3rd sliver car .
The first thing I do is hand wash the Jeep , then clean out the bucket and fill it back up with soap & water ( soap of your choice ).
Then take your wash mitt and soap up a section on the Jeep ( only do a section at a time ) then get your clay bar rub down the spot you have soaped and do the rest of the Jeep like that . IF THE CLAY BAR IS STICKING TO THE PAINT ADD MORE SOAP WITH WASH MITT DO NOT LET IT DRY UP OR IT WILL DAMAGE THE PAINT.

That's all I got at this time ;)
I hope this helps? :smiley_thumbs_up:

This happens to every car.

I clayed my Caliber after having it for 1.5 years as the spots were starting to annoy me, and my car is garaged as well. A year later I clayed it again and the clay bar was much cleaner afterwards, and the paint was silky smooth :)

Its particles from the air around you (rail dust, brake dust, etc) that stick to the clear coat and rust. Hence why you see it on the plastic parts as well. We had a white '01 Caravan and it was really bad, i thought it was just Chrysler paint, but its a problem with every colour on every car.

Make sure that you wax after you clay, as the clay will remove everything on your paint (wax/sealers/etc)

You know how cars get chips at teh edge of teh door where it has been opened into random things, cars, bricks, concrete. Well I have a chip on my patriot door edge... after 2 months..... Worse still it's not even on the side that opens, its on the edge of the door which has the hinge, it stays near the car!

Next up is the black muffler mod.[/QUOTE]I've heard about this (mod) several times on many threads. In the UK the (silencer) as wecall it comes painted in black already, at least it did on my Black Riot.:smiley_thumbs_up:
