I saw this on US News and World Report a report of the 5 most expensive Small SUVs to own. I wonder if their taking LEAKS into account for this??

Jeep Liberty
MSRP: $23,255 - $28,735

The Jeep Liberty offers real off-road performance, iconic Jeep styling and the classic touch of an optional canvas roof. If your plans take you off-road regularly, it looks like a cool option.

However, of the 22 small SUVs we analyzed, the Jeep Liberty has the highest Total Cost of Ownership, according to IntelliChoice. Even the least expensive Liberty has a TCO of $39,335, while a fully-equipped model can run as high as $44,196 over five years. That translates to a “Poor” rating at every trim level. Exceptionally high fuel costs, hefty depreciation and expensive maintenance explain the jaw-dropping numbers.

Better Buy: If you must have that macho Jeep styling and serious off-road capability, you don’t have to go broke to get it. You just have to turn around and walk a few steps in the Jeep showroom. For just as a Jeep SUV has the highest TCO in its class, another Jeep SUV has the lowest. The five-year cost of owning a Jeep Patriot runs as low as $29,135, earning the car an “Above Average” rating from IntelliChoice. The Patriot is as capable as the Liberty on the trail, yet it costs less to fuel, maintain and insure. It’s less expensive up front, too. MSRP from $17,795

yea, cost of ownership sux

lift kits, offroad, tires, all those offroad goodies really ad to the cost of ownership.
cost of ownership for other SUV's? hmm $5 license plate bracket from pep boys?

have a 03 liberty, only expense so far was like $650 for tires.

Chrysler knew what is was doing with the first Liberty. It was small but it had decent power, it could tow, and the 4x4 models were actually pretty decent off-road. The new version was designed more to be a Dodge (Nitro) than it was to be a Jeep, and this shows. The loaded "Limited" models are nice, but for $30k you can step up to a Grand Cherokee or even a Commander. No wonder the new Libby's aren't selling.

I'd agree the current Liberty is just a Nitro in Jeep Clothing. It is a waste of metal and plastic. Wrangler, Patriot, Grand Cherokee and Commander all offer at least one unique quality, Liberty does not. There is nothing wrong with the Liberty, it's just unnecessary.

Many owners like their Liberty. Not a big stretch, a person should like the car they chose to buy.

I find that very interesting that Patriot gets such high marks!:smiley_thumbs_up:

I dumped my Liberty as soon as the lease was up

I keep two 4x4s the Land Rover and a Jeep. The Liberty was OK just uncomfortable, mileage almost as bad as the LR and not very capable off road. Replaced it with the patriot which, so far, is a vastly superior vehicle.

I didn't like the Liberty

I have to say I wasn't impressed with the Liberty as well.It didn't give me the impression of being really that much bigger on the inside and yet it sucks so much more expensive fuel.It feels quite heavy and it doesn't come with a manual tranny and that's a big NO for me when it comes to 4 x 4.The only benefit I see with Liberty is its towing capacity. Before I would buy the Liberty I would definitely get the Dodge or Ford Ranger 4x4 pick up or any other American built pick up truck.

I don't know about you guys but I see TONS of 2010 Liberty's driving around here in Ontario and Michigan so they have to be selling somewhat well. They are actually great looking vehicles but like some of you mentioned above, if I'm going to pay that much for a Jeep, I would rather get a Cherokee or a Commander...
