Just got our new Patriot yesterday. My wife says the windows need to be tinted because someone can walk by and see everything stored inside (car seat, DVD, etc).

She called the dealer today, waiting to hear back. I told her I bet they'll want $400 to have "their guy" do it. Has anyone tried any of the DIY tint kits like snaptint.com. If anyone had a shop do it (even dealer), what did it cost for everything but the windshield?

If you live in warm and/or sunny part of the country--there most likely are businesses that specialize in tinting--use them, not the dealer. Also remember: many states have laws regarding the level of tint on the driver's and front passenger's windows. My local cop writes a couple a tickets a week on this...

Its 35% in my state, already checked with Department of Safety. The summer heat is another reason my wife wanted the tint. Have quite a few days with heat index around 100-105. I see a lot of vehicles with the metallic/mirrored tint on the roads in my area. After getting info from DOS, I was surprised to learn it's illegal here.

I DO NOT recommend doing it yourself. When I had the driver and passenger windows tinted on my last vehicle, it cost around $85. That was with having them take off the old tint, too.

Very inexpensive and well worth the hassle you save yourself.

Agree with Langsta. Cost us $75 to get illegal tint on the front windows to match the back; a shade darker than legal but looks sweet, and that was good quality 3M product. So, you're probably lookin' at $250-$300 for all 7 windows... Tinting really is an art and takes a lot of practice to get right.

I used to tint windows for a living, don't try to do it yourself. It doesn't take much to mess up a window, one piece of dirt or crease and the whole piece of tint is shot. Pretty easy for me to screw up a window, let alone someone who didn't used to tint 3 cars a day.

Hitzy is right, I found the same. You can probably do better than $400. I just received a quote for 5 large windows that was $250 at a reputable shop.

I would strong recommend agains DIY when it comes to window tint. In fact wthin the industry they say the better tint jobs have less to do with the tint film and much more to do with the experience of the installer.

There are several YouTube videos showing a tint installation and to even do a reasonable job takes some serious skill.

I know you are going to pay an extra $100+, but you will save a whole lot in the end in time and having to look at a crappy job down the road.

My Sport plus didn't have the tint so I got a local guy who specialises in such things. 24 hours and it was done. It cost me ÂŁ470.00. I had limo black for the rear and 35% for the front windows. I've done them myself before but it's a skill.

I have a family member with DIY tint in the back of his car. It wasn't a great job to begin with and, over time, it has bubbled to the point where he can't even really see all that well out the back. I borrowed it once and it was truly awful. Pay a pro or do without.

"their guy" is just a tint installer they hire and charge double the rate. Go to a auto detailing place that does window tint and will stand by their work. usually the places that have been around for a while. It shouldn't cost more then $200 for the whole job

It is good to get it done when the car is new before there is dust hidden in the crevices that can fall out and mess up the job.

I just saw a quote in Denver for $75 for the front two windows. He offers 3M and Llumar. There is disagreement on the forums which is better. BMW forum says don't go with either of those metalic films. Get a ceramic like HuperOptik films. Others says Llulmar is the best. Guess I will talk to a couple of places.
