What do you guys think? I might trade in my 2WD Patriot for a 2006 4WD Jeep Grand Cherokee with a HEMI. This thing is SUPER SWEET. Loaded with virtually every option. Quadra-Trac II active full-time 4WD system. It is Trail Rated. Oh wait....Sorry, I had to wipe off my drool.

65,000 miles and no warranty. I have a lifetime warranty on the Patriot. I have considered getting dedicated snow tires and keeping my Patriot but that GJ sure looks nice.

Gas prices be damned, this is a HEMI!!!

Ha! No racing planned. I grew up in the 60's-70's muscle car era and the Hemi has this mystique from that era. I know it is not the same Hemi as in the past. I would love to test drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8.

That is as bad a choice as my LandRover

fortunately I can afford toys so the Land Rover stays, just not as an every day vehicle. I can't see any advantage to the GC with its V8. The patriot 4x4 is very competent and when I need something more basic I pull the Land Rover out of the garage.

Coming back down to reality now. I just saw Hemi on the back of that GJ and temporarily went insane I guess. This would not be a good commuter car as well. I figured I would be spending another $150 per month in gas.

I have been looking at older Cherokees too as something I could trade forsome other vehicles I have.

I had no idea they were rated so well off road until now. I always thought they were just a fancy Jeep with not much off road ability. Boy, was I ever wrong.

It is not the same as the old 426 hemi from the 70's. I had one of those in an old Sport Fury rag top with the dash push button trans. I was lucky, I guess, to grow up in the factory muscle car era. Drove a lot of Mopars, 340 and 440 six packs, hemi's, etc. Also nice Chevys like 350HP 327 Vettes, 409's, and 450 horse 427's. I had a Mustang with a Shelby 429 and 3 holly 2 barrels, auto with line locks. Of course that one was not stock, but there were some nice stock vehicles in those days. Those were the car hop street racing days. Heck the local police would come find me to race when they got a new police interceptor just to see what their new one would do. They would run their lights when we'd race on the street, usually about 3-4 am when no one else was out. A couple times friends saw it and thought I was being chased by them.

Man, you LIVED it didn't you? Great story!! I was there in time but could only mostly admire the cars. I did get a 1965 Mustang 2+2 Fastback with a 289 4 speed that was very fast. Even a guy who owned a 1970 Boss 302 remarked how fast it was.

Just make sure you have it checked out. I believe it was Gaze who bought a Cherokee (Grand?) as a project vehicle or something. When he went to change the oil, metal shavings in the drained oil... not good.

Gaze... whatever happened from then on? Don't recall seeing the finale of the story.

Moral of the story - there is a JEEP for every purpose, just be sure to know what your needs are before going with one type or another.

I'm with davecanuck on this one its personal choice and----"Horses for Courses"--I think Jeep do a range of vehicles for all requirements. I'm also still drooling over dixidawgs motoring history...great cars!!

Im a big fan of anything MOPAR and Hemi just take a look at my name and you know I love the past Muscle cars that mother Mopar put out.

I would look to trade for something that would have a warrenty or order a new 4x4 Hemi Truck and I did hear the Durango will be back out and you can get a Hemi in that.

I might say keep the Patriot and order a new Hemi Challenger, man I want one of those bad. I sold my 70 Challenger R/T years ago before I ever got it on the road and now Im kickng myself. I even had a line on getting a 69 426 Hemi motor to put in it.

If anything dosnt have a warrenty its hard to say go back a few years and get it to just have a Hemi.

Good luck and keep us posted.

lets say i just trade my big ram pick it did had the hemi in it..and i love the power and the sound off it.

for gas..bad in city not to bad on highway wen you dont guive it to mutch.

just get what you want.life is short..play.

but not sher about there reliability off those jeeps.

compass and patriot are higher then average relaibility due to there world motors.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but...
The new HEMI's are not as big as the old ones, but actually pack more HP per volume.
The old 426 Hemi was rated and 425HP at the block. Typically though that was underrated and most would measure 450 or so.

The new 6.1L Hemi's that are in the SRT8 vehicles are also rated at 425HP, and are actually pretty close to that. But 6.1L is only 372ci.

But the new ones, like the old ones, have huge potential for more power. Some of the old 440's were getting into the 600+ range with a new cam, some better flowing heads, and headers, etc. The new ones will do the same.

I have a 5.7L Hemi (348ci) in my Charger. Rated at 340hp stock. I have a more aggressive cam in it, high flow headers (stock heads still) and a new computer to adapt to the cam. It dyno's at about 415hp at the block and runs a nice 13.5s quarter mile. About the same as an old 426hemi would do stock.

The original 426 Hemi was way way under rated and more like 500+ stock. I saw a show where they rebuilt all the famous big motors back to factory stock and then dynoed them. The 426 Hemi came out the winner with big numbers.

The new Hemi is a great motor for a new generation. The add ons they have for them could bump them up really high in HP.

My 440 I have for my Coronet R/T is going to be 800HP and that will be 700+ to the wheels.

I new it was underrated. They did that a lot in those days. I always thought 450 or so, but maybe 500 is closer. But remember, that is from 426ci.. equal to 7.0L ! What a monster. :D

If you get 700hp to the wheels, you will have a screaming machine. I'm assuming that it won't be street legal? or maybe just barely??

#22 ·
Oh no its will be street legal. There will be no NOS on it at all and the car will look stock and a 100% grade A show car. The only thing will be the motor when the hood is lifted you might notice the heads are different and the sound of the car when started will mean dont mess with the R/T  you might get me on take off but I will run you down and blow bye.:pepper:

Back to topic order a new Hemi so you have the warranty or keep the Patriot and mod it out.
